Is the Mosin Nagant really all that and a bag of chips?

Recommended Posts

dunno why you thought that ammo was hard to get for them. Easy to find and still cheap.

Would not buy one for bench rest shooting, but just to blast away they are hard to beat.

this thread seems to have been dead for a while but it has a lot of good info in it and may explain to you why some of us love them

I guess it was the multiple posts I see from folks asking where to find cheap ammo for them. I just made an assumption that it had become hard to get and expensive like most other ammo out there.

I'm not trying to disparage the rifle at all or dig at anyone who owns one (or two, or three...). Just don't really know much about them and from some of the posts I've seen here, I was starting to think I was missing out on a budget rifle that is on par with an 03A3 or something like that. It was a "Holy crap! A $100 surplus rifle you can benchrest shoot with??? Why don't I have one?" kind of question behind the original post.

I can't imagine a gun collection not having one. They're really fun to shoot.

Not sure why everyone says they kick like a mule, though. They have more recoil than an AR, sure, but it's like you'll look like an Arab trying out a .577 T-Rex...

I wouldn't mind having a Mosin, but the Mauser I have is enough. That thing's a cannon.

And it was bought for $25 at a hardware store in the sixties. It's in almost perfect shape.

Those old battle rifles are fine.

A Garand is higher on my priority list, though.

Well, I found one on GunBroker for less than a Benjamin, so I decided to buy it. I assume it will be here in the next week or so, then I'll need to hunt up some ammo and head to the range for a testing session. Too bad I don't already have my C&R...

Anyone know where I can get some reasonably priced ammo in the Knoxville area?

If you read about the quality of the true Finn MNs (M 27s?), they can make a much better impression.

The specific types seems to be in two separate categories, and one seems to outrank the other.

I don't know whether these were built or reworked by the Finns-before or after the Winter War.

You realize that the Finnish Army beat the much larger Russian Army in that bitterly cold campaign?

I have an M39 I picked up from a member here, and the accuracy is very impressive. The Finnish rebuilds are generally regarded as higher-quality and more accurate, but you'll pay much more for the pleasure - $250+ seems to be the normal range.

Bought one from them. Its nice. Several here have had success.

"Cheap" is relative. Their antique receiver M39's run $250+ - usually around $300+- plus $20 shipping.

Mine was a 1942 Sk.Y ( added premium for the Sk.Y markings, even though this mark indicates it was their version of national guard, and not front line troops) with a Tula 1897 receiver. It was not one of their high end ones, but I wanted something with a War stock that showed use. And something to shoot. I got it for $269 incl shipping.

They are having a "sale" right now. Including a Finn sling?

Other places to find M39's

Empirearms.com Empire Arms has a good rep, but I have not done business with them.

Check with the Goodlettsville Gun Shop, as he periodically buys some Mosins that are not just the 1891/30...

Well, I picked mine up today. It appears to be a decent specimen of a Soviet Izhevsk M91/30 made in 1943 (I assume that the big number is the year of manufacture). I cleaned the cosmoline off of it, and looked it over. The bore looks good and overall, the rifle is in better shape than I would have expected. It came with a bayonet, parts for the cleaning rod, a sling, and a cartridge case. I'm looking forward to taking it out this weekend and trying it out. Any tips before I take it for my first trip to the range with it?

Clean the chamber or the da** thing will stick. I used a 20 gauge brass brush, Hoppes and a 20 gauge mop to follow. That Cosmoline has a half life (nuclear joke) Not that it really matters...you can take a 2x4 to the bolt and not hurt it...you might do severe damage to the stock though.

What's the "max" accurate range on one of those, around 500 yards?

They are Minute-Of-Nazi weapons good to probably 300-400 yards with the standard optic. I LOVE THESE RIFLES!
