Smith and Wesson 29

Been wanting a S&W 29 4inch blued wanted an older model not the new ones with the lock have been all over you would think with all the gun shops. pawn shops and gun shows I would have found something even if it was out of my price range but still nothing I wasn't looking for a safe queen just wanted to add to my collection can't have a gun collection without one I guess people aren't turning loose of them.

4" are hard to come by. You wouldn't settle for a 6 or 6.5" would you?

Now that you mention it, I have seen very few for sale in my travels. Lots of Rugers, very few Smiths. The few Smiths I have seen were all a couple hundred dollars over priced.

If you don't mind stainless, the 629's seem to be a bit more reasonable.

Good move carter! It's usually a bad idea to sell a good gun, but selling a classic S&W revolver is always a mistake. I sold one once have have regretted it ever since!

I agree, a Model 29 is one of those "must have" guns for a complete collection. I've a got the 8" barrel and it's a pure joy to shoot!

just a quick off topic maybe question... would you leave it like it is in my case...or send it to S&W for a refinish... mine is really not in THAT bad of shape at all, of course its not perfect either...seen pics of MUCH worse come back from Smith looking like a gem...

That's the advantage of the 629s, the finish holds up better But it's a good reminder, I have a model 19 that's in almost perfect condition. I need to keep it that way. I have thought about occasionally carrying it, but I guess it would be wiser to carry the 686 and leave the 19 at home.

I would leave it alone you won't worry about shooting if you spent the money to get it redone you will be scared to get it out to the range plus if you ever had to sell you probably wouldn't recover the cost. As for the stainless vs blued if I were going to carry it all the time stainless would be the way to go.

Try sites like Gunbroker. You will see 29's on it. But you will pay for a good "pre-lock" model. Actually you will want a "pre dash 3" model on the 29.

Well it depends on what you plan to do with the gun. Prior to the late 80's, the 29/629 were not built to take a steady diet of hot loads. In the late 80's, S&W beefed up the design. I have a "pinned and recessed" 629. Nice gun but I keep the loads moderate. I use a Ruger SRH for the hot loads.

Agreed on the hot loads. Pinned a recessed are the best. Not sure about the dashes on a 629, but you gotta go dash-2 or less to get them on a 27, 28, or 29.
