We got 'em both at my house. The blackhawk is nice because of the adjustable sights; but (...to confuse things more...) i like the vaquero because it has an all steel ejector rod housing and gripframe. That makes 'em balance better for me. The fact is ya cant go wrong with either one of them. They are great. I recommend collecting 'em all!!!

Good luck and have fun.

....I don't think the Vaquero has adjustable sights, for target shooting the Blackhawk would be a good choice. I had one years ago, and with .357 ammo it was great fun to plink at dirt clods etc. at ranges on the far side of 100 yds. ...

You are exactly right. The vaquero has fixed sights; that being said, they normally shoot very well. Sometimes ya have to use a bit of "hold over or under (...depending on the load; light bullets low, heavy bullets high....)" for elevation; but they are generally good for windage.

I just bought a Bisley Vaquero in .357. I was hesitant because it has fixed sights but. The sights are dead on! Great fun! I bought an Old El Paso Cheyenne leather rig for it. Yippy Yi Aye Ki Yay! The Bisley has a turned down hammer spur that I like, as well as the Bisley style grip and a wide target trigger. Polished stainless with the fake Ivory. It would look good with a staghorn grip.

Probably not important for the OP's target shooting needs but I have been wondering if the Vaquero models are built as strong as the Blackhawk models? I know some ammo companies make (or at one time, made) Redhawk/Blackhawk specific hunting ammo, and some reloading manuals have loads that are only supposed to be used in Redhawks, Blackhawks, etc. because they are built tough enough to handle those hotter loads. Will the Vaquero models handle such loads, too?

I've been kind of wanting a single-action centerfire revolver. In that format, I would actually prefer fixed sights but could accept adjustable if it meant getting a stronger gun.

The "old blackhawks" and original vaqueros are just alike except for the sights. They are built on the bigger frame (...about 10'% bigger than a colt saa or the original 1955 blackhawks...).The new vaquero montados are basically the same size as a colt saa (....see this link from ruger: Ruger® Vaquero® - Single-Action Revolvers. ...). I wouldn't hotrod the new vaquero montados or the new blackhawks "original 1955 blackhawk" models. The old models are just fine.

Hope this helps.

what's rugar?

My guess is that it is a phonetic spelling of Ruger. It also could be a rural vernacular variant of the original name; we just dont know for sure.

(...dont feel bad about it Rod; we all knew exactly what ya ment!!...--- keep up the good work!!!...)
