if it's black and looks like a cougar, it's a Jaguar. occassionally they have migrated up from South America (or people have had them as pets and released them into the wild or they escaped), however they are very weary of human populations and prefer isolated stretches of woods and mountainous terrain (which is also the reason why you never see any legit crystal clear videos or photos of them and you never see them being confirmed as hit by cars. They don't like loud noises (such as cars, tractor trailers, and buses, etc) and they most often steer clear from high traffic areas, unless they become extremely hungry and aggressive which is rare.

They will attack deer and cattle, dogs and house cats to eat them, and in some cases small defenseless children, but most are very solitary and afraid of humans. The Jaguar is also very nocturnal, another reason why there are no quality photos or videos of these animals in North America.

there is absolutely no such thing as a black mountain lion/cougar. The melanin in their bodies is not supportive of a black coat and is genetically impossible.

a Jaguar from a distance can easily be confused for a mountain lion, as you wouldn't be able to distinguish the dark reddish brown ares from the black patches.
