Self Inflicted camo-dip job on my hunter AR15

I guess I was kinda bored with my all black AR15 used as my varmit hunter so i decided to buy a DIY camo dip kit off of Ebay.

After normal surface prep, painting a base cote is the first real step in this process.

Next is the actual dipping process. After dipping several parts of the stock set, I kinda got discouraged by getting a less than perfect dip pattern. At that point I decided to put the project aside for a while. After about 2 months, and after considering sending the stock set out for a professional job, I finally decided to go ahead and finish the job I’d started, save my $$$, and be satisfied with a less than perfect job, but, this is a hunting rifle, not a showpiece. I figured a coyote wouldn’t notice that the camo was not just right!

I only had three dips left to complete so I got that done, did some touch up work, and sprayed on the clear coat. After drying overnight, I reassembled and well, not perfect, but not too bad either. It is what it is….not too bad if you don't look too close.

When you consider the time and effort needed if you laid all the patterns out by hand this is an amazing time saver. It also results in a pattern that would be very time consuming to duplicate. I honestly can't see anything I would consdier wrong with it.

I do my own camo as well, or at least used to. It would take me days because I would lay out the pattern, spray then wait a few hours for the paint to tack. Lay out another pattern and repeat. It was literally a two day ordeal to produce a decent camo pattern but even then it wasn't as good as yours above.

Looks good to me. You will have to let us know how the dip holds up once you get out and start beating around the woods. Dolomite is right, I use a vinyl cutter to lay out my patterns so it's an hour or 2 in front of a computer to set it up. Then the spray it is another process, I can get up to 2 colors done a day. So at what looks like 5 colors, you saved yourself about 2 extra days of work. I can't really tell any errors on the stock unless I stare at it for a while...hopefully the coyotes won't have too much time to criticize.

A lot better than some that I have seen and I can assure you that whatever you are shooting at is not going to be looking too close.

I think the quality of work you did looks excellent. Certainly NOT a bubba 'smith hack job. You should be proud.

Well, she's not been out of the safe even to sight it in after reassembly! No, it's not a safe queen, it's turkey season! I have a new boss and find myself actually having to concentrate on my job more than ever before, so, less free time. Did I mention it's turkey season? I've taken three longbeards so far and have about a week to get that last one. Maybe then I'll go to the range or actually hunt with this rifle!
