Moving from Georgia

I am moving to nashville this weekend from Atlanta, GA and just wanted to go ahead and get registered on this forum. I am pretty commonly on georgiapacking.org and figured you guys would be the place to go for the same thing here.

I have a bunch of questions so lets get started:

Laws:

Can anyone just give me a quick break down of the differences between georgia and tennessee in terms of gun laws? Here is what I have so far:

Open and Concealed is legal in both with valid permit (I have a GFL)

In TN a non permit holder can't have a loaded pistol in the car ( georgia it has to be in a glove box or in the open) (Girlfriend doesn't have a permit)

In TN no loaded rifles in the car(This sucks as I always had a loaded AR in georgia in the trunk)

Castle Doctrine applies to both states

TN "No Guns Allowed" actually means something.

Both states you can't carry where they serve acholol

That is all I have been able to figure out on my own, if you guys could provide any more information that would be GREAT.

Fun:

In georgia every weekend I had matches, IDPA, Action Pistol, 3 Gun, 600 Yard Rifle, etc.

Where can I go to find what is hosted in the nashville area?

Cops:

In georgia, police didn't know the gun laws, how common is that here?

Permit:

Law says I'm suppose to get another permit within 6 months, mine is valid for years to come, does anyone really care if I just keep a GFL instead?

Buy/Sell:

In Georgia FTF transfers required nothing but a lack of knowledge that that person couldn't legally own a firearm. Couldn't ship across state lines(Had to ship to FFL), and background check when buying through FFL. Is this the same here?

I have alot more, but will ask later, at work at the moment.

A business must be posted very specifically in order for it to be a true gun free zone. A simple "No Guns Allowed" sign is not enough. I'm sure someone will come along and clarify, but the sign has to specifically quote the law. Here's a link to TN's weapon laws: http://michie.lexisnexis.com/tennessee/lpext.dll/tncode/e501/ed40/eff5?f=templates&fn=document-frame.htm&2.0#JD_t39ch17p13

Yep it's the same here. I believe those are federal laws and not state laws.

Here ya go, found the part about gun free zones. A business must post a sign at all entrances that says something very similar to:

PURSUANT TO § 39-17-1359, THE OWNER/OPERATOR OF THIS PROPERTY HAS BANNED WEAPONS ON THIS PROPERTY, OR WITHIN THIS BUILDING OR THIS PORTION OF THIS BUILDING. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS PROHIBITION IS PUNISHABLE AS A CRIMINAL ACT UNDER STATE LAW AND MAY SUBJECT THE VIOLATOR TO A FINE OF NOT MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($500).

It has to say that, a simple "No Guns Allowed" sign just wont cut it. You can still be asked to leave but you won't be charged with a crime unless you refuse to leave after being asked to (trespassing).

This is how it is in georgia, very helpful.

If you have a DL with a TN residence on it, you best get yourself a TN HCP. They are not hard to obtain and depending on the requirements in GA you may simply need to fill out the paper work and show a copy of your GA permit.

My DL is valid for another 9 years, I am not getting a tennesee one until I have to.

Now here is a problem with that, I can't buy from a FFL here then can I?

This is said to be for all places including gov buildings as far as I know. The best place to check on the laws is: http://michie.lexisnexis.com/tennessee/lpext.dll?f=templates&fn=main-h.htm&cp==

If you are an active duty soldier assigned to TN you should be able to buy.

Tom in TN

P.S. WELCOME to TGO

just remember that as long as you continue to use your Georgia DL, that makes you a Georgia resident per law and you will still have to pay GA state tax out of your Tennessee paycheck. if you are going to be here for a period of time, get your paperwork straight. its far less of a headache if something were to happen. and yes, you can keep your GA CCW and get a Tennessee one too.

You might be able to buy long guns here, but not handguns. I have bought long guns in Kentucky and in Alabama with a Tn DL.

I moved here from the Conyers/Lithonia area. Unless you are in the military

it saves you a lot of hassel to have your car, DL and Gun permit all from the same state. I also had a Gerogia permit and had to go through all the training.

WELCOME!!!
