Never heard of this myself, but I'd like to see a field test, rather than the mfg.

I have one in a 8mm Mauser with a decent muzzle brake. There is a tremendous difference. I can tell a difference in point of balance too. That's a good thing for my application, but YMMV.

I had one of these back in the 1980's in my Browning BT-99 trap gun. They were pretty popular at the time. General consensus at the time was that the same weight of lead shot (in a plastic bad with a little epoxy poured in) placed in the bolt hold did pretty much the same thing. The mercury reducer has some baffles in it to help reduce recoil as the mercury tries to go thru it, but about 90% of the effect seems to come from the weight, at least in my experience.

They work very, VERY well in reducing felt recoil. They are not a gimmick, are not well known by most folks, and have been used for about as long as they have been making big bore rifles. The ones that I have installed required me to drill from the buttstock...can use 1 big one or several small ones to get the same effect. Some are made to fit the factory buttstock hole depending on the gun. but yes...the majority of the effect comes from the extra mass.

The difference in felt recoil can be dramatic. A good semi auto gas shotgun with a good pad and a couple of recoil arrestors can make a target 12ga load feel like a break action .410

Even the ones that screw on the gripcap of shotguns work well

They certainly change the balance of a gun, which may not be as much of an issue with a rifle than with a shotgun. Seems most rifle shots are at somewhat stationary targets, not requiring you to swing the gun to make the shot. I don't have any experience with them in rifles. On a shotgun, I can't imagine hanging one in front of the forend.

I have two of these in my 50BMG bolt gun. I pressed them into the billet aluminum stock when I was machining it. I do not know if it helps or not as this is a 20+ pound rifle. I still feel recoil, but at this level every little bit helps.

Just put one in my 870 which is a real cheek killer. Wow! What a difference. Next will be my 835 Mossburg turkey gun. I hate that gun and I am glad I only have to shoot it once a year. lol
