WC860 and Thunderbird 5070?

Recommended Posts

I wondered if anybody had ever used either one of these powders? I've not tried the WC860 yet but did load some T5070 in some .30-06 with Hornady 180 gr. spire points. It shot ok but left some unburned powder in the bore. It's as slow as a snail going uphill. It might work for heavier bullets.

Both are powders designed for the 50BMG and both are just slightly easier to ignite than concrete. The good news is it is not possible to get too much in a case the size of a 30-06, the bad news is you probably cant get more than 1800fps out of them and that assumes a pretty long barrel. You can get too much of the wc860 in cartridges the size of the 300wby or 378 wby so be a bit careful in large magnums where H870 data should serve as a starting load.

Yeah their designed with the .50 BMG in mind. I loaded 64 gr. with the 180 gr Hornady in .30-06 and I used a CCI 250 primer. I'm trying to get set up to cast my own bullets. I've got 2 .30 cal. molds, but the heaviest is 168 gr. I probably need a 200 gr. or heavier. I got this powder as a gift and I'm gonna try to use it.

What cal. are you shooting it in? The most powder capacity I have is a .30-06, but I loaded some 7mm Mag. with T5070 for a friend with 160 gr. and CCI 250 and it did alright.
