Do you have to register your handgun?

I had a handgun stolen. When I went to the police station to make a report, the officer asked me if my gun was registered? Does he not understand Tennessee law?

Maybe he was asking if it was registered to you with the manufacturer. The serial number or mistakes in reporting the serial number correctly use to be a problem. This also helps if the gun is ever returned to the manufacturer for work.

Or he may just be new.

I was assuming that since he asked this question I needed to get my firearm registered once receiving it back.

Well at least you are an optimist. :D

how long is from 4473 kept by the dealer? if your the orginal owner of the firearm, or purchased it from a FFL...then you might want a bill of sale... plus there going to charge the person a transfer fee just like you bought it off an online store... I personally don't care... i usually trade or buy...never sell lol... i need to stop buying guns and start buying ammo

I understand that form 4473 it is not required for in-state private sales to go through an FFL.

If I wanted to CYA during the in-state private sale, then you would use the FFL correct? All I am trying to achieve is a clear paper trail of the sold firearm from me to the buyer.

Waste of time and paper IMO. You don't think the 'bad guys' can create their own paper trail? You gonna have it witnessed and notarized? Owning, buying, and selling in Tennessee is OK just the way it is, we don't need to have more t's to cross or i's to dot. BUT it still is against the law to use any weapon in an illegal manner......and that's the way it should be.
