Okay, got the C&R, and from what I read, I have to get a Mosin. Even if I don't want one, I HAVE to (though I really do want one). School me what I am looking for. I hear hex, round, Tula. It makes my head hurt.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Watching this thread. Submitted my C&R paperwork about a week ago. I too will soon be Mosin Nagant shopping.

My first was a round receiver. Now I have a hex and I much prefer it.

If you can find them, then go for a Finn M39 though.

Yeah, first I bought a round. Then I bought a hex. Then I bought an M44. Then I bought another round. Then I bought another hex. Then I bought a Finn M39. Then I bought two more rounds. Then I bought yet another round.

So pcrc is right - get a bigger safe!! They're all good guns. Just made at different times and/or different places. Start with whatever you can find cheapest (probably a $69 round receiver). Play with it. If you like it, buy others.

My name is kb4ns, and I'm a Mosiholic. :)

As someone here on TGO (I think Mike 357) once mused, when you have a Mosin you must also get a tin of 7.62x54r ammo that you never open. Keep it with you and take it to the grave. I'd go ahead and just buy a crate or four of the stuff.

No you have to get two tins of ammo one to shoot and one to save.

Hex Receiver Tula

Unless you can find a Remington or Westinghouse at a good price then you call me :-)

I haven't gotten a Mosin yet, but its not too far in the near future. My first C&R purchase was a CZ 82, these are a neat little thing.

With a C&R license, you certainly don't HAVE to get a Mosin. That said, here's why getting several would be smart:

1) Eventually the supply will run out. Prices will climb. So, decent investment potential.

2) Someday, you might want one. Better to already have it than run into a short supply/higher prices.

3) Trade material. There is absoutely nothing wrong with getting C&R firearms solely to have as trading material. Five years from now, that M1 Carbine you really want may be out of reach for a cash sale. But he might take a nice Mosin to lower the price!

Keep in mind that it was not long ago that like new CZ52s were $100, Russian Capture 98ks were $125, Russian Capture Lugers were $500, Czech CZ50s were $99, and M1 rifles & carbines were under $200. Chinese Broomhandle Mausers were only $150 in the '80's. A decent one will run $1000 or more today. The little CZ82 pistols for sale today at $200 will only go up in price.

Another rifle you want to pick up is a Mauser 98 in 8mm. They are starting to climb in price. 8mm is still fairly cheap too. I'd go ahead and get a K98 and a Vz24. Schmitt Rubins are another rifle that the price are really starting to climb. Great rifle too from what I heard!

There's a lesson on inflation in here too. I should buy a couple Russian Mosins while they're still $75 and just put them away.

I've been eyeballing Aim's VZ24's. I want to buy two. One to keep stock and one to rebarrel in 308.

Ok. My 2 Cents: Learn a lot before you buy. Go here:

ATF Online - Publications - Firearms - Curios or Relics List

And see what is C&R, and then research the specific models.

Inexpensive C&R Rifles you should own: Mosin ($75-1000+ range depending on build, rarity, and nationality)

Enfield ($250 and up, depending on build rarity, nationality. FYI: There are a few in 7.62Nato)

Mauser based -various models from various nations $230 and up and up)

Schmidt-Rubin / K31 Swiss rifle $220+ depending on wood type used in stock

SKS: Some few models are C&R - $250ish and up And even if they are not C&R, I still recommend them.

Mosin: Pictures and explanations of the various models:

How to Recognize Different Variations of Mosin Nagant Rifles

Get at least one 1891/30 - Hex are older, War time round are good, too. - I have a 1943 war time.

IF you can find a 1891 - Get it - especially if it is Pre-1898 (makes it "Antique," and get familiar with what antique firearms are compared to C&R... )

If you can Find a Westinghouse or Remington, they were built for the Czar for WWI.

Get Finn Mosins - M91 (think 1891 built by the Finns) M24, M27,M28, or M39

If you are getting a M39 the Sk.Y marked are the most sought after, for some odd reason (Sk.Y were their national guard type troops, not necessarily front line.) Also, the M39 was designed to shoot any form of 7.62x54r (r=rimmed, not Russian) including machine gun ammo...

I have a M39 - Sk.Y with a 1897 Tula receiver. Considered Antique.

The argument is the M27/28 series or the M39 are the most accurate, barring the Finn specialty made target rifles (M28/76 for example: Finnish M28/76 7.62X54R 27in Target Rifle. Very good condition )

However, expect to pay close to $1000 for one of the specialty Finns.

Here is a good source for M39 Finn's www.gunsnammo.com

Enjoy and get a second job, you will need the $$$!

M38/44s are hard to come by anymore. Pretty much sold them all out, though I'm sure there will be another batch come through at some point.

I bought a crate. 2 cans, opened one then had to buy another can to replace in the crate!!!! Now I have a full case for the Zombie apocalypse and 440 rounds to" familiarize with"

Gee I already own 3 out of 5 here and I don't even have a C&R!
