Would Appreciate A Little "Scope/optics" Advice! :)

I have a FN SCAR (light) which currently has no optics on it at all and I am buying a Browning A-Bolt 300 Win-Mag also sans optics.

Although I could possibly change my mind, I don't currently plan to do any hunting with the Browning - both it and the SCAR are really just for the fun of shooting (and hopefully with some skilled marksmanship). I'd like to mount a good scope and hopefully one that would work well on either platform.

My primary question is whether it's silly to expect one scope to work well on both platforms and/or if I need a scope specific to each?

The type of scope I'm thinking of would be a "traditional" type of riflescope style and likely a 3x9x40 configuration. I'm looking primairily at Luepold and Trijicon and leanign toward Trijicon although I'm open to sugestions.

Any thoughts, suggestions (especially from those experienced with such scopes) would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I dunno about pulling a scope off a gun and putting it back. While you can get a quality quick release that allows this, its for the SAME GUN. So you pull it off and put it back on, its still zeroed in where you left it with these mounts. But when you put it on another gun, its going to be off zero, and if you fix it, now its wrong for the first gun, and so forth. You would end up re-zeroing the scope (to the tune of between 5 and 20 shots) every time you popped it off one gun and onto the other, unless you spent a great deal of time to ensure that the same scope settings worked on both guns, a very difficult task.

I have never had any trouble from leopould scopes and I do think they have a lifetime warrenty (check that?).

I would get one with adjustable power, so you can use it at a variety of ranges and scenarios for fun. Zoom in to snipe at something, zoom out to pop multiple targets at a medium distance, etc.

The bolt action, you might want a long range, high magnification scope, maybe a 20 power or higher, while the scar might be best served with a 5-10 power or a 2-7 power sort of setup for medium ranges. But that is just me talking, thats what I would do with those guns.

So, in brief, get 2 scopes, and tailor them to the guns, leopould is a great brand (no clue about the other brand), and get a variable power scope on the SCAR at least, while the BA might be fine with a single power or less adjustments if you want to save money on it.

Depending on the size and how you hold/use the scar, a pistol scope may be an option, give it a think. Where is your head in relation to the scope when you fire it, if the scope is way in front of you, try pistol, if its close up, try rifle.

In traditional scopes, you can't beat Leupold. I would do two seperate optics. My favorite traditional scope is a VXII 4-12x40 with adjustable objective. It's $450 or so, and works better than my others because you can dial out paralax at any range. I have a few other Leupold 3-9x40 in other grades. Even the rifleman grade is a good scope. Those scopes may be a little big for a SCAR, but are perfect for the Browning.

I sort of figured that one scope for two very different rifles would probably not work. :P

I probably prefer a Trijicon ACOG for the SCAR if I'm going to buy something dedicated to that platform but I may have to want t couple of months before I spring for a good scope for the Browning!

If we ever get a chance to go shooting, I'll show you a few of my standard Leupolds. Like I said, even the Rifleman grade is a good scope, and it won't bust anybody's budget. +1 for the ACOG on th SCAR. It will ding your wallet, but it's real fitting for that gun.

I went ahead and bought an ACOG for my SCAR from Outpost Armory (actually, before taxes, they had a better price than any "internet' price I could find plus they had it in stock where many of the sites were out of the model I wanted).

Will have to decide on what to get for the new Browning A-Bolt (which i picked up on Saturday...can't wait to shoot it!).

That A Bolt is a really nice rifle. Here's my plain jane X Bolt with the VXII scope. Bass Pro used to have a big stock of Leupold scopes, and the prices were good. I was in there a few days ago, and they appear to be back at full inventory in the gun department.
