Any guys in Memphis area looking for a side job who are good? I'm in Shelby Forest and need @400-450 sq/ft of kitchen and laundry room tiled. I can do it, but we have an 8 month old and it will take me weeks(way too anal), wife wants it done in a day or two. It is important that tile is your profession and you stand behind your work.

wanting to tile over existing vinyl floor on concrete foundation

Anyone want to come give an estimate?

I'm not a professional installer, but wouldn't the vinyl need to be removed before installing tile to prevent the tiles from cracking? I'd like to put tile in my kitchen, but don't look forward to removing the old vinyl floor.

i've heard mixed opinions on that:

some say if the vinyl is secured well and you sand it a little bit to make the thinset adhere, its fine, some say no way.

I'm not in the business, but I have put down ceramic tile down. I would never consider

putting it over vinyl. Vinyl is too elastic for my comfort. The grout and bed has to adhere

to something. Not saying it can't be done, but it wouldn't do for me.

I think we're just gonna put a laminate floor over the vinyl. Dont want to go through the trouble of tiling, and I can do the laminate in a day or two

I think thats the best idea. I saw some laminate that looked like slate the other day at Lowes. Wish they would have had that around when we decided to tile our house.

This. I am not in the business either but I have done a bit of tile work. I had a buddy/neighbor when I was still in SoCal who was a tiler and he taught me a bit. While you could lay it over the vinyl, you would never see a professional do that in thier house.

My wife tried to tile over Vinyl while I was away in the Army. The tiles kept cracking all over the place. She stated it was a full time job doing the replacements.

In the end she called in the pro's and they laid backing board over the 3/4in flooring and did a re install. Since then we have had no issues.

Tiling over vinyl on a slab is doable. Providing the vinyl is solidly glued. I have tiled my entire first floor (also in the Shelby Forest) some of it had vinyl. I has been down for over two years with no problem. A good thinset is a must.

well, the vinyl is maybe 2 years old and is very solid, it may be an option but now we are leaning toward a good laminate

I just did my kitchen and mudroom with Allure Resilient flooring from Home Depot. It was WAY better than tiling, and I'm very pleased with the result. It was pretty fun, too. Id highly recommend it. Just over $2.00/sq. foot, but no other stuff needed. No glue or grout. Score, snap, and stick 'em together.

Did it instead of tiling. Very glad I didn't tile. Plus, its not freezing cold on your feet.

Pull up the viynl, put down some Hardiback and do it proper.

dont need backer board on top of concrete, we've ruled out tile at this point anyways, gonna float either a laminate or engineered wood floor
