Are those Fusion kits well regarded?

In a word, yes. Fusion is run by Bob Serva, who used to be the president of Dan Wesson. His kits and guns are very highly regarded. As a disclaimer, I don't own one. I base my opinion on my research and the opinions of other 1911 owners. They have a whole subforum on one of the 1911 forums. Check them out.

Well, it is honestly going to cost you a lot more in the long run to upgrade a 1911 than to just buy one with all the features you like. Also, a lot of 1911 parts aren't just "drop in" parts. Many require to be fitted in order to function properly. Actually building a 1911 from the ground up takes a lot of patience and work. If that's something you're up for, more power to you.

My ADD has kicked in for the moment and I'm probably going to build a couple more ARs before I do another 1911. I've decided I want matching lightweight ARs in .22LR and .223 to go with the heavy beast I've already got. I'm still going to buy or build a 1911 with a proper .45 chamber but I guess I'll be shooting the 9mm one I've got now for a while.
