A fellow Savage connesieur asked me to make him a combination cross draw/strong side holster with a thumb break for his 1907 Savage. I jumped at the chance. I think it's pretty cool to mate a newer style leather with a relic like this. Here is the result:

This model pistol had a starring role in the Tom Hanks movie "Road to Perdition". Savage advertised them with the slogan "Ten Shots Quick!" ALthough mine is well worn, it points well, shoots great, and is 100% reliable. They just don't make em like that any more.

Out of curiosity, what caliber is the Savage?

The 45 ACP version was submitted at the same time as the 1911. Imagine how things might have been had the Savage won the trials?

And to give you an idea of worth if it is a 45 ACP version I give you this:

The Savage is a 32 ACP. My wife won't let me purchase a 45.

Nice job and cool pistol. I've been lucky to cherry pick several guns from my dad's collection, a Savage is one of them. They had an add with Buffalo Bill Cody for them.

What tools would you consider the bare minimum to make a holster?

Going to try my hand at making one for myself. I know it is cheaper to just buy one but skills gained are priceless.

It's how I learned. I really enjoy it, and I expect you will as well. The Tandy store is a great place to get your tools and materials. The people there are very helpful and knowledgeable as well. If you try it and have questions, I'd be happy to help any way I can. You can expect to spend $150 to $200 to start, and as you make some, you'll find a few more tools you'd like to have.

That is a beautiful holster but dang it! Looked up the savage pistol and now I want one. But can't afford $22,000. The old savage advertising is especially good because it promises that anybody can shoot the pistol accurately with zero practice! Apparently it will also never jam and will never shoot the owner in the butt or otherwise go off accidentally.

Here is my first attempt:

I sandwiched the gun between two pieces of leather, the back was dry and the front was damp. I then used a vacuum sealer to help shape the damp front peice. After I had the leather formed I covered it with the ostrich embossed cow hide after sewing the two main pieces together. I used a spray adhesive to glue it on then put it back into the vacuum sealer for a hour or so more to make sure I get a good bond. My next one is going to have the stitching all the way through all layers for a more finished look. You can see the stictching through the thin fake ostrich hide.
