carry permit class ??

do you have to be 21 just to take the class,,or can you do that part before your birthday,,then send the papers to the State on your birthday??

You must be 21 to attend, to the best of my knowledge. At least thats what I saw when looking for a class for a friend's son. Maybe some of the other more experienced members here will be able to answer more definitively.

There's no provision in the law that says you must be 21 to take the course, only to apply for HCP. So unless it's a TNDOS "rule", I don't think you must be.

However, I believe there's some time limit on how long you can wait to apply for the HCP after completing the course (6 months ?) but I couldn't find that right off in TCA just now). It may just be a TNDOS rule also, rather than in statute, can't remember.

Somebody like FG will be along to clarify that I'm sure..

Just need to verify how long the school certificate is good for, you wouldn't want for her to have to take it twice.

More than one person has reported they waited too long and had to do just that, pay for school twice.

The certificate you submit to the state is good for six months. So you can take the class if you are within six months of your 21st birthday.

I wasnt referring to the rules for getting a permit. I only said that every place I contacted said you must be 21 to attend the class. Maybe the places I contacted had their own rules. I dont know.

Those are range rules. When I worked for a range here the rule was you could take it up to 6 months before your 21st birthday, but you had to be 21 to shoot a gun on the range alone, so you needed to have a parent take the class with you.

I used to recommend people take it about 4-5 months before their birthday, at that age, because it left a little overlap to get to the DMV. Be a bummer to have your certificate expire on your birthday and you not be able to go that day.

I believe the Guns and Leather policy is that you must be 21 or within 6 months of 21... So that the certificate doesn't expire before you are allowed to turn it in.

That would certainly be unfortunate. You never know when you're going to get busy, or when there will be inclement weather, or when you will forget that your birthday is on a Sunday and the DMV is closed, or any number of other things. Much better to give yourself some wiggle room.
