What would you do in a situation like this?

I haven't read all of the replies, but here is how I would respond to the original situation posed by the op:

Dial 911 and, with the operator on the phone, command the man to drop the weapon. If he runs, let him run. If he comes at me, fire my weapon, giving repeated warnings to stop and drop the weapon, if time allows.

Important question is can you justify your actions afterwards so you can live with them regardless of the outcome. While your fumbling with the phone and with your pistol at the same time the guy pulls out a knife and starts slowly cutting her face off with it. what are you going to do now Sprowse. Also keep in mind that he may be deaf or special. Should that make a difference if a life is in danger.

Sorry Sprowse just thought I would spice it up a little.

If he pulls out a knife and comes at me or the woman, he gets shot at until he stops. I'm not pulling out my gun unless I'm prepared to use it.

If he is cutting her face off with a knife, I probably don't care much if he is deaf or special.
