I work as a conductor for a railroad very labor intensive job work in all weather condition and in the pouring rain. I say I walk at least 12 miles a day. But I would never trade my job for a desk job been doing outdoor work all my life I would just go absolutely crazy if I had to sit behind a desk all day

That's where people have my job mixed up. I deal w/ business as much on my blackberry, as I am CONSTANTLY on the go, as I am sure peejman would attest to with his experiences of QA Managers (specifically ones with more than one plant). My offices are there to house my desktops and files. That's about it. I think I've posted my last in this thread. I'm just trying to get across that you don't have to work on cars or in production to REALLY work for a living.

Get one of these and put it on your desk. It's more indicative of what you really do...

In a past life, I had a sign hanging at my desk with a train engineer's hat and a firefighter's hat... In big letters it said "which hat do I get to wear today?" My boss didn't think it was funny.

This is exactly why I love being an engineer. It is a great compromise between the two.

Labor is very versitile, makes you feel accomplished at the end of the day, makes you worn out physically but often feels good. Its easier to find a job, but its also easier to get laid off. It's less stressful, but also often pays less. On the other hand, you actually get paid for overtime.

A management type position is stressful. It is mentally completely exhausting. You work long hours with no overtime pay and you are often sitting at your desk all day long not even seeing the light of day. Its hard to come home and relax without thinking about work. However, you do get better pay and benifits, and are less likely to get laid off.

A normal desk job for me is in between the two, but not better. it is less stressful, but also very boring. pay is okay, but generally not great. likelyness of layoffs is about the same. its a decent job to have, but for me its just very boring.

Engineering for me is perfect. Although I dont get overtime, the pay is still good. Including overtime there are a good handful of shop guys where I work that make more than me annually, but thats fine. I make more than I need. Likelyhood of layoff isn't too bad. Stress level fluctuats. sometimes its bad, but in general its much better than management. I get to get out and do labor when I want to / need to. or can just work at my desk. overall I think its the best for me.

Manual Labor- Isn't he the President of Mexico?

But seriously, When you are young hard work doesn't bother you.

But as you get older, you work your way into a supervisor position.

It's just the progression of your career.

I'm getting closer to retirement.

That's when the real work begins.

The "Honey do" list has been growing for awhile!
