Unload to Reload?

I recently purchased a 250 rd box of UMC FMJ for my 45ACP. (This is the big yellow box at WM.) I also purchased 100 rds of the same stuff in JHP. After firing 75 rds I have had no problems with the ammo except that the accuracy sucks. So far in my gun (Taurus 1911) all this stuff is good for is making noise. I assume the poor accuracy is due to low quality control in production.

So, my question is, if I bought a bullet puller could I unload these, weigh and sort the bullets, and accuratly weigh and charge the powder, could I end up with consistent reloads? I am planning to buy a reloading set up anyway, so I will have the equipment.

Don't waste your time. Use the ammo to break in your new pistol then when you've collected all the empties reload em' and be done with it.

Whew.... pulling around 300 bullets sounds like a LOT of work to me. What about just blasting away at stuff at shorter ranges; try your 3 and 5 yards drills, etc, with the stuff just to go through it, then load it up later. Also, do you know what kind of powder is in there? (I don't) If you don't know, how will you know you've settled on a safe powder charge?

I can't imagine that you'd miss paper at 9 and 15 feet, even if the stuff is horribly inaccurate.

Sure, it might work, but I would go along with the others and just blast the crap away and save the cases for reloads.

Shoot em up, then reload would be a lot easier and faster.

I'm surprised you aren't getting good results with the UMC.

We used 500rds of that stuff for the break-in on my Dads Dan Wesson and we were getting fantastic groups.

I've had mixed results with the UMC in my .380 - both the best and worst ammo through my Bersa was UMC.

In response to the question about safe powder charge - I had planned to weigh the average factory charge and use the same charge with better precision.

Don't bother pulling the bullets... just shoot them and reload the cases.

You'll need a bout at least 250 rnds to break her in. If not up to about 500 rnds.

Just as a side note, you do know that the factory doesn't go by weight when they load ammo. They go by pressure. That keeps ammo consistant from batch to batch because of the difference in lots of powder.

How do you know its not your aim?I have a taurus 1911 and have used that brand ammo with no problems.I usually use blazer brass and it to works fine,dirty but fine.

LOL I prefer to think the ammo sucks, or the gun sucks, or the sights are loose, or maybe it was just a bad dream. Seriously, even on a bad day I'm not that bad.

I will run a few hundred more rds through it for break in. I ordered some better ammo (Hornady Custom) hoping that will improve my results.
