9mm Ammo Options

For you gents who want some very authoritative answers to 9mm defensive ammunition performance, go to www.hipowersandhandguns.com. At the home page click on Browning Hi Power and a long list of research articles will appear, many of them concerning actual tests of ammo in the Browning Hi Power. But that's O.K because the BHP is the all-time definitive 9mm service pistol, and the rounds tested will perform the same in your gun, assuming similar barrel lengths.

About the third line from the bottom, the author gives a very good look into the 9mm JHP defensive loads available in '06, and again that's O.K. because they're still around. Several other articles appear that test specific 9mm defensive ammo.

Those of you looking into how much wear is imparted by a steady diet of +P and +P+ ammo will find that addressed re the BHP, but from it you can get a good general idea of what it may do or not do to your pistol. The moderator and author is a very fine gentleman, retired policeman, pistol expert, and 9mm expert by the name of Stephen A. Camp. Mr. Camp is a down to earth researcher who deals in practical evaluations and doesn't attempt to teach physics or ballistics. Give it a spin, it's worth it.

I've only got one 9mm... and it's mostly a range gun (XD-9 5" with trigger job, etc...). But I did buy some JHP ammo from Georgia Arms just to have in case I needed or wanted to carry it or use it for home-defense.

100rd of 115gr +p+ new ammo, with Gold-Dot projectiles is $41: http://www.georgia-arms.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2581

1300fps is cooking, and they function great in the XD... they feel light after shooting the .357sig, but are pretty stout in their own right, for a 9mm. I'd say that Gold-Dot is pretty near the top of the food chain in terms of bullet designs, and carrying that much energy would get the job done as well as any. And they cost 1/3 the price of buying factory Speer Gold-Dots in the 20rd boxes...

Double-Tap makes some even stouter loads, that really turn the 9mm on.

I use 9mm for a couple of purposes. The Beretta 92SB gets FMJ moderate loads for jungle use. The P7M8 is an urban weapon and Gold dots are fine. So are numerous other rounds. Urban BGs not on drugs generally only require 1 round - thought I'd probably give them three. :D
