Im new to reloading. my local gun dealer sold me a box of 1000 cci Magnum #350 primers. I went in ears open and mouth shut, and thats what i was told to use... Should i be using regular large pistol primers or are the magnum large pistol primers correct? I have already loaded 500 rnds with them. They are loaded 30% under max,and seem to fire GREAT from my gun. It has never been this accurate. I tested several loads to find one i felt worked best. Im just worried that the hotter primer may be dangerous in some way... the recipe is: _230gr lead round nose

_5.6gr unique

_3/4 crimp

_pressure/velocity unknown

_3" group freehand at 25yds

Please let me know if anything i did is dangerous:death:

45 ACP uses regular "large pistol" primers. Magnums are for... magnums, 357, 44, etc. Magnum powder burns at a different rate than regular and there is more of it in a cartridge, so the mag primers are different.

It shouldnt hurt anything, but its not really the correct thing to use. I don't crimp my 45 autos for target loads, its just that much more wear on the brass, IMHO. My target loads are also very weak, and no crimp works fine for them.

I would swap to the LP primers anyway, just to do it "right", but I dont think it is "dangerous" in an underpowered target load. If you use them in a HOT load for defense or hunting or something, the extra power of the primer could create a problem -- I am not sure, but I would not do it.

Please do not do this again: shoot something you are not sure of before asking. Ask first, shoot second, you only have 2 hands, 2 eyes, etc and blowing them up is a bad idea.

Large Pistol primers would be what I would have bought. The magnum primers are fine.

If that's all I had, they would get used.

_3/4 crimp…

:

I am new to reloading and trying to get the crimp right on my .45s. You mentioned a 3/4 crimp. How do you measure that?

Jonnin was right to point out the safety issue. I should have. As far as the crimping, I crimp very lightly

around the Golden Sabers I use, but I couldn't give you a figure. Don't go nuts on the crimping. You

appear to have found your good load. :)

By 3/4 crimp i mean that when you hold the cartridge all the way up in a crimp/post size die. tighten the adjusting screw until you feel it touch the case neck. lower the cartridge down some and turn the adjuster 3/4 turn more... 1/2 turn is considered a light crimp, and a full turn is a heavy crimp... so 3/4 is middelin. I should specify that i have lee equipment and a 4 die set where the seating and crimp operations are seperate. if you dont have a crimp die they are about 10 bucks. Its also worth mentioning that you must measure EVERY case to get a consistant crimp.

New here and not looking to start a war, but as i said in my post... i did ask first. apparantly i got some bad info. I caught the mistake when i started reloading for my 9 and went to a store withmore inventory. it was only then that i saw that there are magnum and regular for all sizes. Thanks for the input the loads i made will go into my stock for when the zombies attack. the rest of the primers i have will be traded at the next gun show... and now i know.

I'll be glad to swap even with you LP for Magnum primers. I'm well stocked with LP and well

everything except magnums rifle or pistol. I put way too many orders in during the messianic

debacle.

nothing wrong with using them, i use them in 40 s&w when it was hard finding primers. but i did run a few tests over my chronograph to see what was the different between the two primers. what i found out is that is the mag primers gave me about 50 fps more than the standard primers when i dropped the same powder weight. i would get a traper crimp die for the 45acp. i use a lee brand for the 45acp and it works well.

Got the same die set...BTW 40 sw is a high intensity round that requires the use of magnum primers... read a box of remington regular small pistol primers. It says" not for use in 357 sig, 40sw they require magnum". I only know that as i just started reloading for the 9mm. If it works it works though

YOu might see a few more feet per second out of the same load with the Magnum primers. Other than that, you won't notice any difference. I use Winchester Large Pistol primers, because the say "for regular and magnum loads". I do this just because it makes me always right.:screwy:
