help about a handgun purchase

ok guys im only 20 but have been told numerous times that it is legal for me to purchase and own a pistol in a private sale just not from a ffl..

can anyone please send me a link to the exact laws..

i have a guy willing to sell me a pistol with a bill of sale etc etc. but i just want to make sure we are both abiding by all the laws..
