What a waste of money!

Brine on the roads has got to be one of the biggest wastes of taxpayer money.

Take the snow on Wednesday. They put brine down everywhere, even the side streets were covered with white streaks. Within FIFTEEN minutes of the snow starting to fall, roads were littered with cars slipping and sliding. Within a half-hour, gridlock in metro, Cool Springs and Franklin was all but shut down and the temperature when it all hit? 30°F.

Yes, the snow melted quickly yesterday when the sun came out, but it melted exactly the same time on my sidewalks and patio as it did on my street that was covered in brine.

I have thought this was the case with previous snows, but seriously paid attention this time. Why do they keep doing it if it really doesn't help?

Because the sheeple in general believe it works. It doesn't.

If they just put down a sand/salt mix without any water added, it would have been a lot better. But god forbid anybody in the south do what they do up north.

being from up north i laugh because with the money they spend on brine they could buy another Truck or TWO in the county to help put down salt and plow. I mean 2" of snow in Clarksville on Wednesday and school is closed for 3 days? That is a joke!!!

The snow is GONE in Williamson County today, and school is still closed. I live off of a county road covered in shade–it was clear. I drove halfway across the county this morning and never saw a patch of ice bigger than a Sno-Cone.

Knoxville will close school if they are just predicting snow.

You can thank the sue happy people for that. It isn't about the roads it is about what happens if there is an accident with the school bus.

Just like the weather guys get kickbacks from Kroger when they forcast snow, the car wash guys probably give kickbacks to DOT for making everybodies car dirty... :D:P:D

I couldn't agree with you more! It's so ridiculous it's down right stupid. Also, if you will notice, half the time with TN's warm winter climate it will rain before turning to snow and wash away the brine before the snow ever reaches the surface.

This is my problem with it. Also, this is what happened Wednesday. Brine DOES make a difference as long as it isn't washed away.

its crazy stupid here when it snows.

In Memphis people will freak out like its the end of the world if they see even one snowflake. At a previous job they shut the whole place down for the day over 15mins of very light snowfall that melted as soon as it hit the ground.

If you enjoy the salt brine rusting away your car, you'll really love the beet juice they're beginning to mix with it in some counties. Try to gwt that off your new white car! I am of the opinion that someone high up in the Tennessee government owns a chain of car washes and possibly a beat farm.

I would think the brine would work well AFTER the snow event. Once the roads are coverd in snow and ice, and there is no more in the forecast. But I've always wondered about the logic of using it before a good snowing.

I've never thought about that. I think your right. Especially if they warmed it up good as they were applying it. Would have to come out of a tar spraying type truck used for paving.

I was driving when the first flakes began to fall on Wednesday afternoon. The roads were dry as a bone and it was 30°F. It never rained anywhere I was in Nashville/Franklin before it started snowing. It took all of 15 minutes to go from dry and black asphalt to covered in snow.

Maybe they own a beet pickling facility too and that's how they're getting their brine. They're getting it on all ends.

The beet juice thing has been around for a few years. The mixture lowers the freezing point of the brine compound, making it effective at lower temperatures.

Don't pistol whip someone with your gun. You might mar the finish.[/url]

Love it.
