Glad to see some conservative thought coming out of my Alma Mater. For a school that labeled itself "Critical Thinking University" and renamed a quad the "Peace Quad" during the 90's, this is truly a rare thing to see in print from one of their professors.

My only question is, why require only the female students to own a firearm or other means of self-protection and why open the shooting range only to the rifle/pistol shooting teams and all female students who want to use it? Yeah, I realize that the likelihood of a male student being raped is much lower (although it can still happen) but muggings, etc. can happen to either gender. It requires no more effort on the part of a criminal's trigger finger to shoot a male than it does to shoot a female and one gender is just as 'helpless' as the other when facing an armed attacker unarmed.

You have to understand the general liberal culture around Loyola to get why he is focusing on women. Loyola, and New Orleans in general, have a significant issue with rape and crime against women. It's been a problem for years, even when I attended in the early 90s. The school's solution was hilarious. First, they issue "self defense tactics" pamplets, which included such gems as "don't resist," "do as your attacker says," "never carry a weapon, it will just be used against you," and "try to get a good description of your attacker, so that police can catch him." They also started the Loyola Take Back The Night Event, in which lesbians and liberal chicks march around uptown with candles chanting things like "No Means No" and "It's My Body". A few of the local martial arts schools tried to set up self-defense classes on campus, only to be turned away. One of the trainers that I knew personally was told that he was "part of the problem" and that teaching women to fight would only "cause their attackers to do them greater harm."

It was always fascinating to me, because they were teaching women to be independent, self-reliant and dominant in every aspect except self defense, where they were taught to be quiet, compliant, and fearful.

I can promise you two things: 1) no one will ever be allowed to carry a weapon on campus and 2)this professor will probably face discipline from his superiors for this article.
