Cetme or HI-Pointe Carbin for SHTF?

Recommended Posts

I have a Cetme, collecting dust. I can sell it, buy a Hi-Point Carbine and have some cash to boot.

Cons

a. I am not taking the cetme dear hunting (a bit crass)

b. the cetme is expensive to feed

c. heavy: Carrying this over a long range isn't ideal

d. the carbine is 9mm, so 100 yards of effective range (will I ever need more?)

Pros

a. Big ass bullet

b. 400 yard effective range

c. it looks tacticool.

I am thinking:

Sell the Cetme for $500

Buy a Hi-Point carbine for $175.00 - Great CQB/ Cheap to feed / fun to shoot/

Buy a Mosin 91/30 - $100 Similar ballisitics to .308/ ammo is cheap but not easy to find locally/ take it deer hunting

Take the other $200 and save up for a Glock/1911/Sig

Thoughts?

Sell the Cetme and put that money toward an AR15. I have a Cetme, and it shoots great but I wouldn't depend on it for a SHTF situation.

A Freudian slip? :screwy:

Sounds like a good plan. Though the 91/30 ain't exactly a flyweight.

Similar situation not too long ago. Trimmed the fat, invested in a quality AR and never looked back. Sans the war of Stoner v/s Kalashnikov; Truth is, they absolutely work if you do your part. Take into account the plethora of uppers in various calibers also. Get a base 5.56 to start, later get a larger caliber upper for hunting. Win Win.

If you must stay within your $500 range I'd say get either an ak or a 44mag lever action, I wouldn't rely on a pistol caliber carbine for my bug out long arm. There's not much a pistol caliber carbine can do that a hi cap pistol can't. Make sure you have a good pistol though there are many times when you would need a pistol more than a rifle

Well, if you want a pistol and a rifle that use the same cartridge, this is a good idea. The Hi Point carbines shoot good and they seem to have all the kinks worked out as they have been on the market for a long time. The Hi Point carbines come in 9, 40 and 45 caliber. I have only shot the 9mm carbine and loved it. I could hit great at 75 yards, open sights, and i am no marksman. I am sure you can pick up a used for for around 200 and pick up a nice used pistola for around 300.

I like the idea you have of a getting 9mm rifle and a 9mm pistol for aprox $500. Rifle for hunting, pistol for self defense.

It would be hard to let go of the Cetme though.

I have a friend down in south Alabama with a buffalo farm. He uses the Hi-point carbine to kill deer all year long. He says they work great for it. He's the one that talked me into buying one.

I like the idea of matching calibers of a pistol and a carbine. While a pistol may do essentially the same thing as a carbine, I can do things with a carbine I can't do with a pistol.

I bought a HP 9mm and it is reliable and accurate. Fun to shoot and I've seen people hit reliably with them passed 100yds.

I'm looking for a .357 lever action to match loads with revolvers. Not a bad way to go IMHO.

In a SHTF rifle application .308 is a great round; 9mm is unacceptable.

Everything is application driven. :D

+1. .308 is also one of the easier types of rifle ammo to find due to widespread usage. It's heavier, but if comparing to a pistol caliber carbine, well, it's no comparison in effectiveness.

hi-points retail for $299ish. i have owned one and never had a problem with it. traded it for an SKS. you can build an AR for just over $500.

I will admit to basically complete ignorance on this subject, but can you direct me to a build that isn't a complete POS and will be at or around this price? I wasn't aware that such a task was possible (no snark - I'm being 100% serious). I always figured that the minimum you were looking at for a decent setup was at least about $800. I'm the first to admit that I don't need anything top-of-the-line at this moment, but I didn't think I could put together something that wouldn't immediately fall back apart for so much less than that.
