I recall reading somewhere on here that someone under 21 can legally buy a handgun from a private individual; But not an FFL or gunstore.

Does my memory fail me or am i correct?

Also if possible can you show me the Statute stating this?

At the age of 18 you are legally eligible to own a handgun but not buy one. Federal Laws also come into play.

There are far better here to answer the question, specifically OhShoot.

Here's the TCA. You'll need to search.

I found an old thread basically stating what you just said.

I can posses it at 18 but cannot purchase it until 21.

That pretty well sums it up.

You can buy handgun at 18 from an individual, but not till 21 from a FFL (federal law).

As far as TN statute, it's simply that it's illegal to sell a firearm to anyone under 18 for any purpose, although a firearm can be loaned or given to one under 18 for lawful sporting activity.

-------------------

39-17-1303. Unlawful sale, loan or gift of firearm. —

(a) A person commits an offense who:

(1) Intentionally, knowingly or recklessly sells, loans or makes a gift of a firearm or switchblade knife to a minor;

.........

(:) It is a defense to prosecution under subdivision (a)(1) that:

(1) A firearm was loaned or given to a minor for the purposes of hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, sport shooting or any other lawful sporting activity; and

.................

(d) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor.

So Grot, the long and short of it is if you have one it must be unloaded and separated from the ammunition and you should probably be on your way to or from a range or hunting. Don't get caught carrying it so that in less than a year you can legally get your permit and carry with the rest of us. Good luck.
