Mossberg 500 Heat Shield?

Hi guys,

I just bought a Mossberg 500 and I saw a picture of one with a heat shield over the barrel. I think it makes them look pretty cool and more like a trench gun. I looked on the internet and they sell fiberglass and then metal ones.

Which should I get and are there pros or cons?

I dont know much about them but have only seem what appeared to be the metal ones on them. just my 2 cents.

What are the effects of heat on fiberglass?

Is it possible it will melt?

Metal is probably going to be a little more durable.

I have a metal one on my Mossy......I like it though it really serves no purpose for me as I've yet to touch that end of the gun......

There is always the "Max Max" look. Wrap it up in some duct tape.

metal will last better because fiber glass can crack over time and will chip or break if hit too hard. i work with it so you would not want it on a gun you use.

Well I'm back. I looked on ebay, and the only barrels they have are the fiberglass ones and the ones with ghost rings...neither of which I want. Does anybody have a link to a Mossberg Brandmetal heat shield?I've looked and looked, but all I can find are ATI ones or chrome lol

I've had a black polymer heat shield on my Mossberg 500 for about 8 years and its great. (Made from the same polymer/plastic as many pistol frames.) It still looks new and you don't have to worry about scratching it or the barrel. They handle high temperatures & won't scratch, dent, or rust like steel ones & actually protect your gun better than metal ones. Smack the polymer one with a hammer and it will just flex and absorb the hit. I think I paid about $20 for mine online.
