AR 10 complete upper

Considering a .308/7.62 NATO upper for a project rifle. Would like to keep it light enough to carry but accurate enough for 200 yd. kill shot. Have ruled out bull barrel and 24" ss bench rifle stuff. Was also thinking piston operated instead of DI. Have looked at Armalite, DPMS etc but piston operation sends search toward a custom shop. Any suggestions?

the AR10 for the money is a lot of gun. Its not a piston gun, but how often are you gonna shoot enough rounds for that to matter vs. price...think about how much 7.62 ammo you could buy with that $1,000 or more you will save and how much better a shot you will be for it. If you can err a bit more on accuracy in exchange for a robust reliable and proven system a good FAL can be had for about $1,000 and they are great guns. If looks arent terribly important and your gonna put a decent scope on it the FN FNAR and cheaper factory camo'd Winchester SX-AR are definitely worth a look. I have an SX-AR I got at Sportsmans warehouse for $850 and its way more accurate then I am....typically a 1moa semiauto(downsides are mags at $60 each 10/20rds and they recommend a factory/armorer cleaning at 1,000rds).

Hope this helps!

Very good info. I have Herstal FNAR and like the gun. Not as many options available around mounts and rails as I am needing. You are dead on about the grand difference. Have been looking at POF .308. Would buy used. Have been surprised at how many are out there used. SSK Industries Whisper .338 is another item that is calling my name. Intended use is hog hunting. Also coyote hunt and have a couple of 5.56 w/24" barrels for the dogs. Just considering standardizing rounds and the .308 will get a dog but the 5.56 is challenged hunting. The long barreled AR is a pain to carry also. Wish I could keep them all but....
