Does my HCP allow me to still carry it?

As I have participated in the Draco thread mentioned by Lester, I have not weighed in here. I have, however been sorely tempted to make a flippant remark like "go ahead and carry it, I need the money," but have shown remarkable restraint. The bottom line, I think, is there is no definitive answer. I find the Tennessee code definition of pistol very interesting and it gives imaginative DAs out to make a name for themselves by going against these " weapons of mass destruction" an opportunity for publicity and people like me the opportunity to make a buck.

How about you stuff your attitude as well. These questions get asked over and over again and it is a simple thing to look up the answer or do a little search here on the site to find your own answer.

Seems to me that if there was a problem with the OP's question that the moderators would handle it. Maybe I am wrong but I also think that is why these forums exist.

One thing to consider is as long as the PLR is classified as a pistol and you have a HCP it can be legally carried in places/situations where an AR15 type weapon/long gun can not.

Example: You see someone walk through your yard and they cross the street and go behind the neighbors house. You can grab your PLR and go over and investigate. If you were to take a loaded and chambered AR15 I think you could be charged with intent to go armed the minute your foot left your property. Is this correct? The PLR can also be in your vehicle loaded with a round chambered and be legal.

I think the OP does not want to lose the PLR's flexibility by adding a VFG if it alters the weapons legal classification. There is more freedom for carrying a pistol with an HCP than there is a long gun. I don't think anyone would advise carrying one at the local shopping mall legal or not.

Remember that if you add a VFG to a handgun you have to get an approved Form 1, which, in effect, means that you are manufacturing a new firearm (in this case, an AOW). So, you are designing the gun to be fired with two hands. The TCA doesn't directly address it, but under Federal law, once the modification is done pursuant to the Form 1, it would cease to be a handgun, and would become an AOW.

It definitely would not be an handgun under Federal law, and I still don't think it meets the definition under TN law.

Does anyone know if there is an AG opinion regarding this?

theres no AG opinion on this, but you are 100% correct.

FWIW... this sounds like a Kwik situation

And yet, the one time this issue was actually tried in court, BATF dropped the charges after fact finding went against them:

Vertical forward grip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apparently, no one has actually ever been sent to prison, or indeed even charged, with the forward grip thing. Just stands as a BATF statement of "we be da thugs."

actually... yep there was a kid arrested and charged in Sumner County for this exact same thing, same gun... same forward grip and all... My gunsmith Sam had to testify in court about it as an instructor, dealer, and gunsmith. It got thrrewn out because the officer didnt have reason for the stop.

I was really referring to federal cases, but that's interesting, and after reading some of MikePapa1's stories, I believe anything that comes out of Sumner Co. ....

Was the Sumner Co case in fact a vertical forward grip? If it is the same case MikePapa1 mentioned, had got the impression that it was the ordinary plastic forward horizontal barrel shroud. But if the case was about a forward vertical grip, it is certainly more reassuring to PLR-16 owners who don't decorate them with forward vertical grips.
