SSP vs ESP in IDPA, not a query for the FBI or CIA but maybe NPD IMO ... LOL!

Alright. As usual, I'm still confused. Can you believe it ...

I am still not clear on the difference between SSP and ESP.

Except:

1) SSP is double action first shot, double only or safe action.

2) There is a weight difference.

So ... Is the Springfield XDM an ESP?

The CZ 75b an SSP? (double action first shot)

Also, during competition, is there a difference in load capacity? SSP at 10+1 and 10 in extras mags?

Would ESP be difference in mag capacity?

The XD is considered an ESP gun only.

The Springfield XD seems to be very similar to the Glock but there are

some major differences. When you pull the trigger on a Glock, you are

in fact, cocking the striker about halfway. When you pull the trigger

on the XD, you aren't cocking the striker at all. Because of that, the

ATF considers this pistol to be a single action pistol. When the XD

first came out, Springfield called it a single action striker fired

pistol.

Because this pistol is considered a single action, it cannot be used for

Stock Service Pistol Division. It can only be used in Enhanced Service

Pistol Division. Glocks are classed with double action pistols because

of the fact that the trigger pull finishes cocking the striker.

any gun that can be shot in SSP can also be used in ESP. The same magazine capacity is both in SSP and ESP.

Check out the IDPA website it will help with most of your questions. the SSP division is for double actio first shot pistol like Glocks. The Springfield XD's and XDM's are classified in the ESP division because they are single action first shot. The magazine capacity is 10+1 for the 1st mag then 10 rounds thereafter for SSP & ESP. the capacity is 8+1 for CDP.

you seem to have a handle on it, on CZ 75B is SSP but the CZ 75B SA is ESP any 1911 that is not a 45 is ESP

the safe action doesnt make SSP on the Glock as part of the trigger you cock the striker the last 1/8" or so and that is what makes it a double action

any gun that can be shot in SSP can also be used in ESP. The same magazine capacity is both in SSP and ESP.

So, in a qualifier match, if you use a SSP (CZ 75b), it would be to your advantage to stay with SSP classification because of the more lenient time categories, as opposed to ESP categories (time brackets), i.e Novice, Marksman, Sharpshooter, etc.

Correct?

SSP is more of a "stock" type division, ESP has more allowances for modifications and single action triggers. There is no advantage per say as you compete in your division. That way a guy with a Glock isn't trying to compete directly with a tricked out 9mm 1911 with a sweet 1 pound trigger.

Keep in mind that a standard CZ75B has the capability of lowering the hammer for a double action first shot OR leaving the hammer cocked and putting the safety on. Starting with the hammer de-cocked will put you in SSP. Starting cocked and locked will put you in ESP.

Yep. What GaryXD just said. Hammer down or cocked and locked makes the difference.

Don't get caught up in the equipment differences, you can buy yourself a Glock or CZ and practice and be able to effectively compete within either division.

The biggest thing, find you something you like to shoot and have fun with it.
