One call, one less sign in my town

I dropped my wife of at the store and drove around in the parking lot with the kids and noticed a local tobacco shop that I hadn't seen before. Then I saw the no concealed wepons sign with a big fat gun buster. The phone number was on the door so I took a picture. Just got home and gave the place a call. I inquired as to the purpose of the sign and to my surprise the guy that owns the place has a permit himself and was only posting to keep illegal wepons out. He couldn't believe it when I explained the changes in the law about the sign. He thanked me and told me he would take it down asap.

I am almost convinced that a lot of businesses post not knowing what they are doing. In this case it didn't hurt to ask.

Several people I know that own businesses (specificaly restaurants that serve alcohol) have told me that the information that they received from the Restaurant Owners Assc seemed to imply it was required that they post signs. Maybe some places think they are required to do it.

Yep, never hurts to call and just ask about a posting. You don't have to tell them if their posting is legal or not or have an attitude, just find out why...and as in the case you may find they are misinformed and can set them straight.

I would wager most business owners have no idea what the actual law is and only have received information second hand, if at all.

But I admit I do have to wonder about anyone that thinks a sign will keep out "illegal" weapons.....

I have a good one. My local Rural Power company here has a " No Guns Allowed" poster in their door. I asked them why and they couldn`t really give an answer. They said that the boss wanted it there. I guess that he is afraid that someone will get upset over their bill and come after him. Stupid is as Stupid does.

You need to be aware that the Restaurant Owners Association, and the Tennessee Hospitality Assoication are actively anti-gun. I am not sure about the National Restaurant Association (with its very coincidental acronym NRA) but I feel fairly certain they are also anti's. As a restaurant owner, I receive literature all the time from these groups wanting me to join. I will not do it until they change their policies.

Here is a quote from the latest letter I got from the Tennessee Hospitality Association, dated 12/21/2010. It lists their "achievements" through the year as a way to entice me to join:

"Guns in Bars: The legislature passed a new version of the 2009 bill that allows permit holders to carry weapons in restaurants that sell alcohol. The 2010 bill allows permit holders to carry weapons wherever alcohol is served unless the business has posted a notice prohibiting firearms. WHILE WE DID NOT SUCCEED IN DEFEATING THE BILL, WE DID SUCCEED IN SIMPLIFYING THE POSTING REQUIREMENTS SO THAT THE INTERNATIONAL "NO GUNS" SYMBOL OF A CIRCLE WITH A LINE THROUGH IT AND A GUN INSIDE IS SUFFICIENT..."

All caps added by me for emphasis. They also opposed a bill that would have allowed carry permit holders to keep their guns locked in their cars while at work, even if the business posted the property.
