Canceled.

I like the idea of minimalist camping and was hoping to get a group together for some share and learn camping/survivalist techniques in the next month or so. I camped at a place late last year called the obed wild and scenic river, its located near wartburg, about 40 minutes from Knoxville. Its free to camp in the back country and the river is accessible. As an easy water source. Its got alot of scenic bluffs and this time of year would be very unlikely to see anyone around.

While I want to learn and share I'm not trying to prove that I can bug out permanently, so ill be bringing food, water, and probably a tent. Ill ls bring my dog along as she loves it out there.

If your interested in learning and still having a good time reply to this thread and we can figure out dates for next month.

Update:

We are shooting for Feb. 26th and 27th. Call your wife and tell her you can't go shopping, you've got wilderness to tame. It'll probably be cold, so bring appropriate layers and some shelter. The camping spot is about 5 miles from the trail head, so don't over pack, and bring some good boots. I'll update this as the date gets closer so we can figure out carpooling etc if need be.

Feb. 19th and 20th.

Or

Feb. 26th and 27th.

2 options. I'm up for either, but I know the 19th and 20th is the first weekend after Valentine's day so that may hinder some.

Lemme know.

While I'm not up for the "minimalist survival' stuff, I'm always up for a little camping. It's been a long time since my camping gear has seen the light of day and it's about time to go through some of my stuff to see what I may need for future treks. I know I have some cold weather camping stuff including a Zero* sleeping bags and what not but I still don't enjoy the cold at all................

Well, if it is to cold, I have a cabin about 30 min from where you wanted to camp. Always an option since it has a stove.

This sounds like a great time. I'd be interested in going too. I like that you are not planning a bare minimalist trip. I would love to learn the ways of the survivalist, but still enjoy my tent.

One thing though, the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area over there is closed for an "Animal Rest Period" for all of Feb. and March. If the back country area you were thinking of is in Catoosa, I'm pretty sure it is closed to everyone. And I mean everyone. I kayak in that area, and simply want egress / ingress access to the rivers, but I am denied access.

I'd be in for it, but my wife's due date is March 1st, so I have to stay close to the homestead in case she goes into labor early! I'll have to catch the next trip.

The obed wild and scenic river should still be open, along with the cumberland trail state park should still be accessible. If not we can always camp somewhere before alley ford as the trail doesn't enter CWMA until then. I'll make a few calls and see what the situation is for the trail. Thanks for the heads up.

did anybody catch that 5 mile trek part haha I do believe that means i'll be taking my 2 person tent instead of the 10 person one lol, and of course my good ole faithful "BOB" o speaking of which is this a state park, federal or what? I ask this because I hope it's HCP and firearm friendly, cause regardless of some peoples train of thought some animals do have rabies and I've already had a raccoon try and attack me and I've seen what they due to dogs,so a rabid coyote or coon or other varmit dare approach I need my good faithful .40 lol

so I spoke with the park rangers, they told me that catoosa was off limits till March, but then followed it up by saying that noone would be around anyway... as far as carry rights go its a wild and scenic river which I believe is federal but am unsure on rights/restrictions. The 5 mile might b more like 3 depending on where you wanna camp at. I also heard being on the river is fine, so I'm sure thats open to legal interpretation.

I'll throw out another suggestion for a location. Frozen Head State Park is right outside of Wartburg. It has several different trails, with whatever length and difficulty you like. It will definitely be open. Plus it is HCP friendly, since it is a State Park.

If you consider it, I would recommend staying at the Tub Springs camp site, as it is fairly large, and is right next to a guaranteed water source (however it still needs to be treated or filtered). I would also recommend not selecting the Bird Mountain Trail. It is long and very steep.

Either location works for me. I'm not feeling like doing the cabin thing right now though. I'm sure as the date gets closer we will get a better idea of whose going and here we are headed to.

I read this, however there is no way I could swing it, as the due date to request time off for Feb has already passed at work. (I work weekends). I will watch for a future camping trip, sure sounds like allot of fun.

Frozen head is a no go. You have to check in at the gate and can only travel on trails. Only camp at designated spots and have to be off the trails an hour beforedark. Also a sign at the entrance says no firearms. I prefer abit more freedom when back country camping.

I also hiked out at obed and found a nice camping area that we CaN legally be at. I took some pics and a video ill post up tomorrow.

If it's a state park and you have a permit the no firearms sign does not apply. Part of the legislation that opened state parks to carry said they did not need to update signage because of the expense. Signs will be slowly removed as they need replacement. Wish I could make the drive up for this. Maybe you guys will inspire a trip in my neck of the woods.

I was more concerned about the other restrictions. Good to know about the signage though.

Sub'd! This sounds like fun. I have some camping gear that I haven't even tried yet and am anxious to break in. Minimalist is cool with me. Not minimalist is cool with me too. Let me know the dates so I can request it off at work. I only need one, maybe two, weeks notice to get it ok'd. Whoever posted it be a carry friendly locale was right. I don't want to have to fight off a coyote or a PO'd raccoon with my bare hands.

Checking in see if the date is still good for those interested. Send me a PM If you are planning on going. I tried to organize a meet and shoot a few weeks ago and noone showed up for it, so i'd like to see atleast a little bit of commitment this time around.

Lemme know.

Thanks,

Drew

Analog kidd brought up some concern about the location we will be camping in. Just to clarify. We will not be camping inside Catoosa. The camp site is inside of the Obed wild and scenic river area which is a federal government funded park so carry rights should still comply.
