It's amazing to me that some people are still fighting that war in their head.

Folks that understand the real purpose behind it, understand that it is one of the main reasons our country is in the shape it is today. Let me guess, you still believe it was fought to free the slaves, right?

Let me guess, you believe that it had nothing to do with slaves, right? ;)

Lincoln himself said he'd have still fought the war, in order to keep the Union together, whether it freed one slave, all of 'em, or none at all.

My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union.

- Abraham Lincoln

So he, at least, didn't have freeing anybody as a goal, or reason to go to war with the southern states.

If anything, his goal was to keep various states enslaved to and by the Union.

Anyone interested in re fighting the civil war who has lots of time on their hands might enjoy some Harry Turtledove alternate history novels. I haven't read that timeline of Turtledove's. He writes so prolifically that it would be a major chore to read everything he does, and it tends to be addictive because he is very good at what he does. A history perfessor turned twisted novelist.

Timeline-191 has a lot of books covering 150 years of history from when the south won the war--

Only war I have any interest in fighting is the war against idiots and a$$holes... And that one will never be won, I'm afraid. ;)

If you are a Southerner you and other Southerners will know it. If you aren't then you and Southerners will also know it. It's how you were raised and it helps being raised in the South. My family came to this country in 1611. We have relatives that migrated north and west but most of us are still in the South. I am a decendant of slave holders yet my life long good friend and neighbor is black and we both think Southern and country. My wife raised in Nashville is a decendant of slaves and slave holders and each ancestor was black. when i'm around her family I only try to fit in as country and Southern. I don't try to "feel their pain". Southerners seem to be more connected to place than most others in this nation. R.E. Lee and countless others have mentioned this connection to place that we have, and it isn't the same as some of the BS you hear from people in the big northern cities. My wife was representing her company at a publishing trade show at Vanderbilt several years ago and the writer Alice Randall ( who wrote "The Wind Done Gone" and lives in TN) gave a talk on the South and Southern pride. After the talk as my wife was in her booth two yankees walked by discussing the talk and one says to the other " I'm from New York and I don't have new York pride". So, what is a yankee? Well it's "those people"

He didn't say that at all. Certainly slavery was one issue, but it was definitely not the sole issue or even the main one. Liberty and freedom from an overbearing government would need to be pretty high up on the list if not at the top. And in my opinion we're working our way back there today.

The only new history is that which you have not learned yet.

Financial and political chicanery is not a new phenomena. If you would like to have a discussion about the economics behind the "civil war", I will be more than happy to. If you want to make snide comments and wink like a homo, I am not interested.

War is waged over money and power. Whether it's a rich landowners or a growing federal government.... it's all about money and power. Let's not pretend that the south was simply throwing off the "changes of tyranny" or whatever else you may have heard in that Time/Life commercial for the civil war box set. True revolutions are few and far between.

I haven't been called a homo since high school.....that says a lot, huh?

That you got away from the crowd that knew ya, maybe? ;)

Besides, he didn't call you a homo... He just said you winked like one.

True that this is the "General Off-Topic" part of the forum, but this thread does have a topic, and your post is off-topic.

I will ignore it, trust that others will ignore it, and hope that you won't post in this thread again until you have something worthwhile to contribute.

Clint Smith is full'a :P. The purpose in fighting is either to take something away from someone else, or, simply to survive. And in the latter case, surviving is the victory, and the only one that counts.

If you're attacked while out going about you daily life, or even while you're at home, you don't have to utterly decimate the attackers to be the victor; all you have to do is survive, and prevent them from accomplishing their goal.

As for swords and shields... I won't even bother. I can tell you that even a sword has to act as a shield to be effective, and a shield it's self can be a pretty good weapon.

Anyway, Clint Smith needs to stick to guns, and peddling whatever he has to offer concerning them. ;)

And what any of that has to do with the conversation about Yankees and the civil war, I just can't figure out. :D
