New VW to keep Passat name, report says

Volkswagen will keep the Passat name for the new midsize car that it’s building at its Chattanooga auto assembly plant, according to multiple sources in Detroit.

Observers said that the Passat name was flashed on monitors prior to a reception where VW officials are to announce the car's name and images of the vehicle.

VW is planning to formally announce the car’s name and release photos of the vehicle late today in Detroit prior to the start of the North American International Auto Show.

VW declined immediate comment on the report.

On Monday, the German automaker will officially unveil the car at the show.

The Passat name had been considered an option by observers because of the marketing wherewithal that it already has. The Chattanooga-built car is slated to be bigger and less expensive than the European Passat.
