i know that all birds and all mamals (including human) are safe to eat according to the army survival manual so those are no problem and i actually try on a regular basis to eat things that are out of the ordinary just to make them seem normal to me. i can however say that snails are probably out of the question for me.

Not quite exactly true. There are things you need to be aware of. All birds are to be considered a food source except for the hooded pitohui, Hooded Pitohui - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , certain seal and walrus livers as well as polar bear liver are NOT to be eaten, the contain toxic levels of vitamin A, Hypervitaminosis A - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .And the male platypus has poison spurs around its rear legs so it is generally accepted to be left alone. Whats the date on your 21-76? Have you looked up the Air Force manual? The lastest version is FM3-05.70.

i dont know what year it is. its a downloaded version. the heading is FM 21-76 US ARMY SURVIVAL MANUAL. it did mention about the seal and polar bear livers but seeing as how ive never seen one of either outside the zoo i didnt bother to mention it. but that makes me think that maby in an eotwawki situation maby the zoo would be the place to go. its got plenty of shelter and game and who the hell else is gonna think to hide at the zoo?

I don't think I much have to worry about even having an option on eating polar bear, walrus, or seal livers much less a platypus. And I doubt I need to worry about the hooded pithohui unless I choose New Guinea to starve in.

Possum would be a nice addition to having rabbit on the menu.

And I keep salt and pepper in my survival bag. Sticks and leaves might not taste too bad with some seasoning.

Well, at least you will be getting in your fiber.

I would try to avoid bugs and things that crawl but I am sure if hungry enough, even that would change.

If I had the luck of killing a Coyote, I would try to cook it up. I assume it would be a bit gamy but it would be food.

Hey, the US Gummit agrees with BP that there ARE walrus in the Gulf of Mexico.

Sticks and leaves might not taste too bad with some seasoning.

Hint: We can't digest grass, but we can clover.

Big pot of possum and clover, yum....just think greens and ham hock.

True, however I just wanted to put it out there that not ALL mammals and birds should be considered a food source. If the OP had stated "in TN" I wouldnt have posted. So if you want to get technical, survivors should also avoid, whenever possible, game that could harm or kill them. That is all dependant on the survivors skill set and gear on hand. Just because rattle snake is edible doesnt mean every Tom, Dick and Sally should hunt and procure them. Just my 0.02.

Pontiac,

And the looking at zoo's for food could be a viable option. The one thing that would cause me pause would be the vaccination of said critters. I cant remember the time that one should wait prior to eating an animal that had had certain vaccinations.

i didnt know that there was any time limit on things like that but i think ill take my chances cause id probably starve to death before many diseases will kill me if they were to pass to me.

Well that settles it. No more trying to kill off the clover that tries to take over my yard every year, and I know there are possums around here. I see them flattened on the road all the time. I am good to.

Spam, I keep telling my wife to not pack spam for the apocalypse.

My Dad will eat spam any way you can fix it, from straight from the can to fried. I never could get past the smell.

(truth be told, during the apocalypse, I will eat spam begrudgingly, It might be better if I can cover it in clover)

You could always mix the spam and Possum half and half in the stew pot. I am not sure which smell or taste would help the other but it would be interesting. I tried the snails ( S car go) on a cruise they were covered in cheese and bread crumbs kinda tasted like chicken covered in cheese and bread crumbs LOL :D I also pondered over the Eting of humans part and decided to invite the mother in law along, might go down ok if I hold my nose. heh heh

Possum and clover... over and over...

Growing up, we were so poor, there probably isn't much that walks, crawls, flies, or swims in TN that we didn't eat at one time or another. Except bugs... don't know if I could bring myself to eat some insects, although I have eaten fried crickets and mealworms before.

And if it comes to cannibalism, I figure to start off with the vegans and vegetarians... lower in fat and without that gaminess! :)

Well of course we always start with them, we have to get our vegetables some place. However some of those hippies might have side effects.

lessee now, what wouldn't I eat in a survival situation? Yellow snow.

If it comes down to it - there is NOTHING I won't eat to survive. Period. And yes - that includes other people.

Don't think I could bring myself to start killing off people to eat them... but I'll reserve that decision if the time comes and my wife and kids are starving to death and I gotta make a decision :shake:

I would not eat coyotes, skunk, possum or racoon. That would maily be because they are more likely to carry rabies and I AIN'T A GONNA DIE AS A ZOMBIE!!!!:)

Human flesh, well I hope to never find out.
