We have black eye peas year round, but especially on the first day of the year and july 13th. I have onions ,carrots, celery, and bell pepper with frozen veggies sauteing in a cast iron pot with black eye peas and rice to go in later. Have that with some corn bread.

All sounds great....what's significance of July 13?

July 13 1862 was Forrest's raid on Murfreesboro and his birthday, so after the battle he and staff were invited to the Maney's farm (Oaklands) for supper. All they had was black eye peas and sweet taters. So on the 13th of july each year many Southern heritage, and living history folks have black eye peas and sweet taters to commemorate the raid and Forrest's birthday. The Murfreesboro camp Sons of Confederate Veterans holds a supper at Oaklands each year serving black eye peas and sweet taters( among other things).

My wife's former sister in law is from Nebraska. She couldn't believe any one would eat black eyed peas. She said they are cattle feed. I just said "moo".

I had left over black eyed peas w/lunch. Maybe that will bring extra good luck but it not I like them anyway. A big spoon full of ChowChow on top makes them even better :)
