Okay, 'member' for less than a month and already asking for guidance. But, I need ya'llz experience to help me.

I need to send a friend to a female friendly place for self defence training. I need a good, solid, training facility to direct someone towards. I care too much for this person to trust my level of knowledge/experience in this area.

Friend has 'zero' experience with firearms. We need a facility that will not be overly scary, or too deep into the perceived 'macho' aspect of firearms, (under NO circumstances will I consider sending her to Coal Creek in Knoxville!) a place with nothing to 'prove' except promoting safe, sane, self defence training for a classy lady.

We are located in the Knoxville, Tennessee area.

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

You mean, actual firearm self defense course, not just HCP certification, yes?

(meaning, there is no such thing as you are seeking in HCP courses).

HCP is only the beginning. It only makes one 'legal' not 'lethal', if need be.

If you want tacticool training I think you are out of luck. If you just want to get her familiar with firearms in a low pressure setting I'd talk to OhShoot real nice. I don't think OhShoot could teach her any secret ninja crap but he can get her comfortable around weapons (and safe) and teach her how to shoot a human sized target.

I can't say he is willing to do it or anything, he did it for me and has my eternal thanks, but if you could talk him into teaching your friend the basics there isn't a lower pressure, better teacher out there.

After OhShoot shows her the ropes you could find a real defensive class or something.

Uh, well. . 'ninja'? No, we're working folk. I want her to continue to work, walk, laugh, and live in confidence. A firearm is one facet of this process. We've been working on 'awareness', etc.

Austin's is good. My wife sounds similar to your friend. Just to gauge her interest, I sent her to the "Women on Target" (NRA Sponsored) course at Gunny's and she really liked it. A little googling tells me it's not offered anymore.

CCA also offers several courses. Coal Creek Armory Handgun Courses

Frontier Firearms lists a "Women's Handgun Fundamentals" Course... http://www.frontierfirearms.net/gpage5.html

Its a bit of a drive, but the shooters depo here in chattanooga is *very* female friendly. The place is clean with some pink worked into the furnishings, female gun stuff (again some pink stuff as well as some carry purses and other female clothing and carry gear), has female staff (almost always 1-2 on duty), and professional permit and other classes. It has a nice indoor range that is always monitored and safe, has a women's restroom, etc. Its not girly, and its not macho, doing a really good job of hitting the middle ground.

I am just a customer there, not trying to sell anything, these observations are mine, my wifes, and those of a female co-worker who is new to guns.

Austins TN Firearms in Oak Ridge

Mike is a good dude

Sometimes his wife teaches classes

Austin's Tennessee Firearms Gun Shop

Firearms Classes

The classes are well worth the money.

'On Target' in Knoxville has a female instructor that teaches alongside the owner (Doug). I took their HCP course, and they were very friendly and helpful to folks in the class who had very little, if any, experience with firearms.

Thanks for all responses, folks! We'll start checking things out, now that the Holiday season is past.
