AR 15, .223 vs .308

I have been shooting a .223 AR 15 of a friend's and love it, but when shopping around online I have seen .308 ARs as well. What would the differences be besides obviously the size of the bullet. Is one preferred over the other? Any input would be appreciated

If I wanted to deer hunt with an AR platform the 308 would be my choice. If ya like coyote/bobcat hunting, punching paper, or just burning powder the .223 would work just fine. Just my .02cents

A .308 has lots more recoil, and is going to be more expensive. As with all "what do I buy" questions, you need to decide what you are going to do with the rifle. The .308 is better for bigger game and longer range shooting.

I can't believe there isn't a decent rifle range in the Memphis area. That's depressing.

The 308 will shoot a long way (...600+ yards or farther...) with lots less wind drift and great accuracy. The downside is that they are heavy and expensive.

The best 308 setup (...in my opinion, anyway...) is a bolt gun. I've kept 'em for years. They will shoot as far as you can see.

A .223 will do 600 yards. It just doesn't have much energy left when it gets there. Can't argue with a bolt gun, but an AR can be REAL accurate if it's set up right. I have some good bolt guns, but the most accurate rifle I have right now is an AR15.

That is why my first rifle was a 5.56.

I love shooting 45, but they don't get shot nowhere near as much as my 9mm or 22lr for the same reason.

Technically, an AR-15 is the .223 (5.56) rifle while the AR-10 is the .308 (7.62x51) rifle.

Yea but that makes a difference to someone who is asking for advice. Estimating is fine but at least be close. FWIW, mil surp .308 can be had for around .40 a round.

Last time I was at a gun shop looking at .308 it was about that price. But I don't Internet shop for ammo, just primers.

There is a good range in Memphis.. MSSA.. with a 600 yard rifle range.. gee..

use both they are both great rounds can be reloaded for about the same unless you are making match ammo
