What to do when Police arrive.

The key for me would be to avoid any sudden movements or rapid hand gestures, which is why I would drop, rather than throw the pistol. If I could, I would get the gun out of my hand BEFORE the cop gets out of the car.

Of course, I'm still trying to figure out why I'd be in my drive with a gun.........

How do I know the Police have been called and why did my neighbor call?

As a former cop unless I still have a reason to have a gun in my hand I would put the gun in the house and come back outside and wait for them to show. If I see the Police cars approaching (and still have the gun) I will place the gun on the ground and follow instructions.

However… if I have just had an encounter that caused me to pull a gun on someone (And the threat is now over) I will be on the line with the dispatcher and I will do whatever they tell me.

Having been there done that, when my shooting was over, I unloaded the pistol and sat it on the ground when I saw the police arriving (I called them). After the initial contact, hands up etc.every thing went well.

Guys, you got it all wrong. Throw that damn gun as hard or as soft as you want. If it gets scratched.....I would suggest clicking my link that David has for us at the top of the forum and contacting me ASAP. Once you get done with the cops of course.

And my though on some of you question the reason of having your pistol in your hand in YOUR driveway on YOUR land.....I'm unaware that it is a crime to do so. Not here at my place it isn't. I understand the burbs are different but still.

For those having trouble with "pistol in hand in the driveway", where is your car? Don't you have a carry permit? Do you ever go to the gun range or gun show? Some of us can even target practice in our driveway depending on where we live. Heaven help us if we scare deer out of the garden.

I have never shot anyone but I am in my driveway everyday with a gun.

Some people can rob, rape, torture, murder, mutilate and burn and they are never shot.

Why do we, as law abiding citizens, need to worry about getting shot and killed in our own yard?

My neighbors' response to me in the driveway with a gun is "Good morning, Greg", or "What kind of gun is that one?" The entire neighborhood's response to a police in the drive would be "WTF is a police doing here?"

Put the gun on the ground in plain sight, back well away from it, hands in plain sight or on the top of your head, open your ears and do what you are told ASAP if you want to live. Don't be crazy!

Seriously, I'd think you'd be best off to stand there, dead still with the gun pointed at the ground, don't make any sudden movements that could be considered threatening, and follow instructions.

Because more than a few I know would prefer to shoot someone than to draw their next check. They need very little provocation to do so.

You know, I wasn't even going for that angle and it's probably an issue that can probably be dropped sooner or later. My comment was simply a reflection on the fact that I've seen the whole "drop your gun immediately" thing attributed to Tactical Response instructors and/or students before. I can't remember exactly which it was, but I do remember taking mental note when I read it the first time ... wherever it was.

I would try to avoid dropping my firearm on the pavement or driveway. I don't really see a senario where the cops have weapons drawn before I can gently put my Glock on the ground. I would do whatever I thought would make the officer the most comfortable.....without inserting into any part of my body, of course.

A lot depends on the location of your driveway. One thing's pretty certain... If you POINT your gun at the cops, they're probably going to shoot you.

Point taken I've never been taught to chunk my gun away either. I'm honestly more afraid of a quick movement getting me shot than I am slow deliberate movements. I really hope I'm never in that situation to begin with though.

I'm probably just gonna re-holster and go talk to the folks that show up, and see if they're anybody I know. Odds are they will be.

Exactly, if I've broken no laws (I'm on my own property), I'm just going to holster it and ask them if I can help them. I know a bunch of them around here and they all know who I am (through my business) so I'm not worried about a "misunderstanding"

If you are one of those who would drop your weapon before being asked by the authorities than make sure to tape over your serial number just in case someone goes by and sees the serial number......................

I have been in my drive many times with a gun when my wife or myself heard a noise. I guess it is a perk to not living in the city.
