I was wondering if there is anything that i should be aware of when traveling through the following states. KY, IL, MO, and MN. I know that KY MO MN all support my ccw. IL though doesn't is there any way to carry in that state. I know i am just passing through but any moment with out my friend could possibly lead to a bad situation. Thanks

I am 90% sure Erik is correct. DON'T GO TO IL. Anyway to re-route your trip? I would hate for one state to break my ability to carry for the entire trip. After some of the stories i have heard about IL ( may or may not be 100% true) i would not feel good about transporting a unloaded handgun through the state. If you do, research it well and carry a copy of the info you gathered in the vehicle with you just in case.

that's good advice. I would avoid it if you can, but if not then be damn sure of the laws and try not to get pulled over. I've heard horror stories from IL also.

Go to your local Gun Shop and buy a copy of Handgun Carry Regulations. This will answer most questions regarding the Laws for each State, to include transiting States such as Il.

Short of becoming a LEO, there is no way to legally carry in Illinois whether a resident or not. They don't issue or recognize any license/permit to carry. You'll basically want to comply with FOPA -- I wouldn't spend the night there and would stay far away from Chicago (even after McDonald v. Chicago, possession of a handgun there is still illegal without a permit that you can't get). Illinois has no preemption law so there may be other local firearms ordinances as well. Illinois is dominated by Chicago, so it's pretty much what Daley wants -- Rahm Emanuel won't be any better. Federal lawsuits are the only hope there.

Keep it locked in the trunk.

Obey the speed limit.

Do not get pulled over.

I travel to and through IL about a dozen times a year. This is what I do but I stay puckered up and nervous the entire time. Best to just drive around the state really.

Ho hum..same ole ILL horror story thread.

Federal law allows you to transport your weapons through Illinois (including Chicago), just like anywhere else. Simply comply with it as written.

TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 44 > § 926A Prev | Next

§ 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

OhShoot,

I agree it's legal, and the vast majority of IL gun laws are unconstitutional... But, there are documented cases in Chicago and New York of police officers arresting people who aren't violating the federal law... Most of these involve flying into and out of airports, but it might be wise to avoid IL altogether....

Why give them any tax money from gas and food purchases if they're going to be a socialist police state?

If you want to structure your behavior out of fear that an individual, city, country, or state, will violate federal law to "get you", okay, do it.

TN restricts gun rights also, all a matter of degree.

If you feel that what I see as a quixotic protest to drive many miles out of the way to avoid IL is worth it, do that also.
