Anyone here into slot car racing. I've gotten back into it lately as my son enjoys it, and I like the detailed models you can get. Got a new set for Christmas for him (and me :D) and thought about building up a detailed track with buildings, trees, grandstands and all that good stuff (my Dad and I built something like this for model trains when I was a kid)

I'm aware of most of the offerings/forums online but wasn't sure if there were any fans here...speak up if so. What do you run? Build any home-made sets?

For a kickarse example of what I'm wanting to do (but on a scale of maybe 10% of what this guys does) check this out: www.slotmods.com

I've spoken to this guy before and he literally builds everything from hand. No snap together tracks; lays the copper by hand, paints the tire marks on the curbs...insane!

That's awesome. I had a slot car track a long time ago. I would love to have another one

Our whole family enjoys them. Last year I picked up an HO AFX Super Challenge International set for the boy. Was surprised how much the wife and teenage daughter enjoy it.

Wow!!!!

Those are fantastic tracks!

Not knowing anything about them, what sort of $$$ would one be looking at as far as getting into slot cars/tracks?

Thanks

Cars range from $20 to $60 depending on what brand and scale you go with. Track sets cost anywhere from $100 to $500 for a decent starter set. The guy who builds them by hand above quoted me $15,000 for a basic custom build....:(

Well I guess that does seem steep, but I think I would rather have one of those track than one of Al Gore's hybrid hamster cars for the same price....:(

I used to race 1/24 scale at Slot Spot in Old Hickory. Their building burned and they were not open for almost a year and I just never got back into it. I think they have a store in Madison now. I enjoyed it though. I still have my box of stuff around here somewhere.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check them out. It's killing me not being able to take out the set until Christmas. Got a couple more cars off eBay in the mail today, M3 GTR and 911 GT3 RSR. The detail on these things is amazing.

I had a slot car back in the 60's. There was a track at Harding Mall in Nashville. They had several tracks, but the one I remember had a really high banked turn at one end. Wonder what ever happened to my car?

A lot! That stuff was fun and expensive in the mid to late sixties. I used to make some hot slot cars and won

some trophies racing them back then. It was a huge step up from model trains. It was fun.

A group of us from High School in the 70's used to race slot cars. We were all building custom 1/24 scale. it was a little expensive back then. But considering what my hobbies cost now I might want to get back into it. We had a great time doing it.

Well the track is awesome. Took a while to set up, didn't realize how big 12' by 6' really was....

Got some buildings to go with it, ill take a pic later and show ya'll the finished product.

Do the cars still fly off the track a lot?

These actually stay on pretty well. Of course when my son floors it on the controller they go off, but not near as much as some of the sets I used to play with. I haven't put up the gaurd rails yet, that should help as well.
