Well...I'm legal.

After a short wait of about 2 1/2 weeks I got a nice surprise in the mail yesterday. I opened the letter and stared at the license with a mixture of emotions. On the one hand I'm proud to be exercising my 2nd amendment right and taking another step in the protection of my family and myself. On the other hand I feel the awesome weight of responsibility that exercising this right carries with it. I hope to never lose either of these feelings.

Thanks to all of you who without knowing it played a small role in helping me through my decision process that ultimately led me to this point.

Thanks everyone!

Man...that's a quick turn around now. Have you planned when you're going to do your obligatory Walmart trip?

Already made the Lowes run this morning. It's a different feeling that's for sure.

Soon it will be a different feeling to not have it on your side. You'll feel naked without it.

Thanks much all for the congratulations and well wishes!

Congratulations to you!

Getting mine was a very long wait (August until late December)...I actually got my HCP delivered to me on Wednesday, December 23, 2009.

It was a great feeling and yes, it is a tremendous responsibility and as Glock30 said, you look at the world and people differently.

Your statement along with Glock30's interests me. Having only carried 1 day I know that something seems different but so many things are. Would either of you elaborate for me?

I could but I think the best thing I could recommend to you is a book called "In The Gravest Extreme" ( Amazon.com: In the Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection (0749522009954): Massad F. Ayoob: Books ) by Massad Ayoob. Massad is practical, down to earth and he's "been there done that" for many years.

Much of the "law" referenced is outdated as are much of the weapons recommendations but the general information is almost timeless. I read this book every year or two (even long before I decided to actually carry on a regular basis).

For me, carrying a weapon is as much a state of mind as much as it is a state of readiness.

Before I started carrying, I looked at what me and those with me were doing. I ignored everyone else. Since I started carrying, I look at everyone and wonder what they're up to. While the odds of a critical incident happening are low, I'm not going to be unable to respond and defend myself and other innocents.
