Boss GPS tracking employee

His personal cell phone should not be used for work related calls. If it is so important that the boss get in touch with him while out on company business, then the boss should provice a company phone.

I'd get the phone wiped, and tell the boss not to call it unless it is an off hours emergency. Or change the number.

Get a free Google Voice number and give that out. You can point the Google Voice number to the cell phone so that it rings when someone calls the GV #. But using the GV account options, you can set certain incoming #'s to be blocked, go straight to voice mail, etc.

As analog_kidd pointed out a google voice number is a good option. I got one as a co worker at first incorrectly told me I could use it to make phone calls on my data and save minutes, which was incorrect but still google voice works well.

Don't carry a phone. I carry a company phone on company time because I have to, but other than that, I don't need the aggravation. Call the house, leave a message.

At my old job, this was common.

The difference seems to be it was done on company issued phones, and the employees being tracked were Delivery drivers, delivering product for a major beverage distributor.

If it was a personal phone i agree; attempt to press charges.

Incorrect. I have GPS in the handhelds the drivers use, not their Nextels. It is the salesmen I have the GPS on their Nextels. I found it pointless to activate the GPS on the driver's Nextels as the trucks are wired with GPS as well as the handhelds.

I am Big Brother.

However we use it to ensure they are being paid proper mileage (not over or under) as well as to ensure they are visiting accounts like they are supposed to. It is all in company provided equipment, and they sign agreements when the equipment is issued to them.

If this were to happen to my personal phone, I would find a way to uninstall it, and if an issue were made, I would seek legal counsel.

I work for a major utility company and they have GPS on the vehicles. I have never signed anything regarding them knowing where I am. I'm just not too concerned about it. I am where they think I am and all is well. I would have a big problem if they put anything on my personal cell though.
