Flat spots on my tires

Recommended Posts

I just got off the phone with the cycle shop where I bought my four wheeler. It seems that with every tire rotation the back end of the four wheeler drops a little. They said it was probably flat spots from sitting which is probable because I never ride the thing. They also said they would work themselves out when I ride it. My question is do you agree and am I hurting the tires by letting them develop flat spots?

No, it's fine. Bias ply tires will develop flat spots when they sit for a while. It'll vibrate a bit for a while when you ride it until the tire get warm and work the flat spots out. No permanent harm. If it's an issue, sit the quad on blocks so the tires aren't touching.

Ditto on that. My experience has been, slick or bias ply tires will flat spot worse than a radial. But yes, after some miles, they should become round again.

Ben, back in the old days before the last couple of decades-- Radial tires were fairly expensive and most people had old-style non-radial tires.

Some of those old nylon-bias tires would routinely get bad flat spots on them if you let em sit, and in cold weather they could sometimes bounce you along for many miles after you started down the road, before they would get round again. I seem to recall it more noticeable on trucks than cars. Maybe the bigger diameter tires had more diameter to get flat.

Just a stroll down memory lane back to at time when this was a very common problem. Back in those days we also had to walk to school in the snow, uphill both ways.
