The end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

All you folks that think only 1-3% of the world is queer, meaning gay, or whatever they call themselves, need to wake up. I'd say it's at least 10%, if not more depending on where you are.

One of the things people fail to consider is that 1% to 10% of people is a helluva lot more people now than it used to be... and given that means more people in a particular area, you're apt to run into more of them. Also, communications being far better than they've ever been, you hear more from them.

There are no safe, secluded spots left on this globe... now you're forced to deal with what's always been there, because there's no place left to go to get away from it.

While I personally do not agree with the lifestyle, as long as my junk is safe they can do whatever.

I'm not sure it is my place to "not agree" with a homosexual lifestyle. And, honestly, I don't worry about my junk too much. I mean it is incredibly huge and envied by all (even horses) but I do tend to worry about my anus. If this means someone can put something there against my will I am going to have a serious problem and people will get shot.

I don't think it does. This is not a big deal no matter how much people pretend it is.

Yeah. Alot of people miss hanging blacks from trees too.

Being black is not a choice, there is nothing inherently unnatural about being born with darker skin that someone else.

What if they're lesbian interior decorators?

then they will spend way too much time and effort on the carpet.....:(

Really? You miss the eighties? There was more crime, more racism and just about more bad of anything else bad you care to think of.

People tend to romanticize the days gone past and imagine it was some purer, simpler time. The truth is that people forget their struggles and think of the good things that happened back in the "olden days"

Could be that you were a big fan of Flock of Seagulls or something but I would argue that times are much better now.

Your are more than welcome to "romanticize" the present, but IMO there are a lot of things that were better in the past. I could cherry-pick a few things about days gone by that were better, but that wouldn't mean every thing was better.

Given what some doctors and other medical types have to say on the subject, being gay apparently isn't a choice either.

The things that were better then but suck now have very little to do with gays or lesbians... no pun intended.

It did in my original comment.

There's quack docs and shrinks with goofy opinions on all types of things. You can condition someone to like eating crayons, but that wouldn't mean there was any genetic predisposition toward crayon-eating. Scientists have traced all kinds of diseases and maladies to genetic flaws, but I'd be willing to bet that there will never, ever be a geneticist that can offer tangible proof that there is a "gay gene".

Why is it so important to the gay commutity to divorce themselves from the fact that their sexual preference is not a choice? I suspect it's b/c they were getting no traction by arguing that it's a viable alternative to biological norms and that they feel they'll get sympathy, if it's not their fault that something is wrong with them

Not really. It only showed that you have a dislike of a particular thing, not that it being different was actually bad or somehow worse.

I'm sure if there were anyone left alive from that time period, someone might say that they miss prohibition, and that things were better when people were having to sneak around to have a drink. Doesn't make it true, mind you, but they might think it was.

The fact is, the things that are the worst today have very little to do with gays or lesbians. At least not directly. The change in people's thinking that allows... or in some cases forces... the acceptance of certain people... well now, I can agree that part is troublesome. But by the same token, it still does get back to that whole hanging blacks from trees thing.

Well, if it were only one Quack making the claim, I'd probably agree with you. But given that it's not, and that there's apparently been a lot of study of it... I can't write it off as just wishful thinking on anybody's part.

As for there being one particular gene or genes... who knows? Could be that it comes down to a particular combination of things that is responsible. I do know the behavior/preference has been around for as long as the human race has, so there must be something causing it.

Maybe because it really isn't their fault, and they're tired of people like you thinking it is? Maybe they're tired of people looking for a reason to persecute them, or shove them back into the "closet"? I dunno.

I do know it's no skin off my nose whether it's their choice or not. It also doesn't bother me that they're no longer forced to hide that they're gay. It's just not something that makes any difference to me, the way I conduct myself, or even how I treat them, when I deal with or encounter them. It's just a non-issue.

And I refuse to make it an issue, despite the fact that some others would like to.

This is true. I do not promote nor condone the viewing of the aforementioned video. Just pointing out that not every lesbian movie "just works". But if you do choose to watch it, and I recommend that you DO NOT, it's out there. Should you fail to heed this warning and watch it anyway, the good news is that nothing will ever be able to make you gag again. Not blood. Not disgusting dirty diapers. Not really smelly dog farts. NOTHING.

Don't most other militaries already allow gays?

The Israelis have allowed (or rather, required) homosexuals to serve in their military with no restrictions on keeping it some deep dark secret. It doesn't seem to have affected their readiness levels one iota.

Does anyone know what particular advantage(s) come from this? How does it matter, really?

This? Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell?

Advantages? Imagined equality. Does it matter? Only in the minds of some.

Really? No.

I was told on another board that some have been dishonorably discharged, even after 20+ years, just because they were gay, and this will now stop. I need to find out if there is ANY real world advantage to this. So far, I find nothing.

I listened to an interview with someone who researched what happened in other country when they stopped caring about this issue in the military. I can't find a link to it right now but his research indicated that nothing much happened because they were already there and generally didn't want to be found out anyway.

When African Americans were integrated it was apparently a big deal, when women went on ships and such it was, according the interview, a big hassle. Not so with this issue. They were already there so it was no big deal.

I suspect this is another non issue politicians use to whip folks into a frenzy one way or another. I recall when DADT went into effect people like Limbaugh were going nuts UNIT COHESION! SHOWERS! and now they are suddenly all for it.

For me it all comes down to: do your job and I couldn't give a frig what you're doing the rest of the time.
