Don't be like this guy

I just took in a Ruger M77 Mark II 270 Win or at least it was. Seems that the owners lent this rifle to someone else :) and they wanted it to be a 308 Win. KABOOM!! Then the gun plumber in someone came out and they tried to "fix" this problem themselves by disassembling the action piece by piece for some reason. If this thing wasn't a Ruger or another Mauser type action with the claw extractor or controlled round feed design, I don't think this scenario would happen very often.

The stock is wasted. Floor-plate broke. All sorts of missing pieces that I haven't located yet or inventoried/ priced out. Barrel's trashed. The bullet passed through surprisingly though. I've pulled the barrel. I'm trying to remove the bolt from the receiver still.

Anyways if you guys have friends out there like this guys "someone else", tell them to look before they leap next time. I only wish I could have seen this person who fired it immediately after the trigger was pulled. Priceless image there. From what I was told the shooter was only mildly hurt thank God! All fingers and toes still attached. Eyeballs too.

Now I'll inspect the receiver and what parts that are left and build a new one out of it if I'm able. Not sure it will be any cheaper than a new factory however for I charge extra for this sort of work ( :screwy: not really but it sounds about right).

Here is the case....

It's real dumb putting the wrong ammo in a rifle. With that said, if this guy put a short action round in a long action rifle, and didn't feel that something just wasn't right, I would be a little concerned about handing him another functional firearm. He's lucky they didn't have to repair his face.

Its already in pieces. I mean to say, I took it apart. I never did see the stock but from what I was told it split at the mag box and from looking at the mag box I believe the guy. Its bulged real bad. Barrel looks normal other than a really dirty bore and the necking cut I put on it to remove it from the receiver. The bullet passed through. From what I can tell the receiver/bolt appear to be fine. I'm going to dye test it for cracks later. I'm guessing this guy got off lucky. I've seen a weatherby all exploded like a schematic from doing something similar and comparing the two, this one isn't near as bad. Lucky SOB!

I'll bet it kicked!!!!! That goes to prove the strength of a mauser type action; specifically, Ruger's take on the grand old design. I have no idea what kind of pressure that created, but you know it's an astronomical number. Just goes to show that one can never be too careful. I can see where something similar to that would be easy to do if you had several rifles and ammo scattered about at a shooting bench.

I would think the kick would depend on how much gas made it down the barrel. Would be real dependent on muzzle velocity.

I just dropped a .243 (necked down .308) into my .270 rifle. It snaps right in, and I'm sure would chamber just fine. The cartridge is obviously way too short looking at it.

I'm not sure whats going on here but another person came in today with an UN-FIRED 243 win stuck in a 25-06 rem rifle. The chamber was rough with rust and thats what held this cartridge in the chamber. I feel like Bill Murray in ground hog day.
