I grew up loving westerns, except John Wayne movies. There's something about him that I don't like. Some of the plots are good, but I don't think he's a good actor.

I'll definitely watch this one, though. I really like Jeff Bridges.

Don't like John Wayne!!!!!:eek: Dam, you might as well say you aren't afraid of Chuck Norris.

I have the exact same feelings about John Wayne movies...I can't stand to watch one. Almost any other western, I love them. I just don't see the "affection".

I won't be going to see it. It just seems wrong to remake such a JW classic. I will watch it on TV when it makes it there.

This rendition follows the book by Charles Portis. It is not a remake of the John Wayne version - it's a more literal rendition of the original work. I'm guessing Rooster Cogburn is going to quite a bit more flawed (in the book he's still a drunk, but isn't loveable, friendly, or much else other than a hunter of men / drunk). If it really follows the book, Mattie will be the real focus of attention.

Either way, these guys have a blank check from me. Fargo, Lebowski, Raising Arizona...I'll go see it; everybody else waits for HBO or Redbox.

I loved the original and am a John Wayne fan, but after No Country for Old Men the Coens can do no wrong by me. I can't wait for this, it looks fantastic.

If I'm going to sleep through a movie, I'm going to do it in my own home.

I've noticed a big trend against this, not saying just here, just because John Wayne was in the original. I never did get the whole aversion to remakes anyway. If you like the original, watch that, but sometimes updates can be really good.

My wife said almost the same thing. I told her that True Grit was a different animal. So she wants to watch the original first. JW won a oscar for this movie. It really is a good flick. I was against the remake until I read that the Coen's didn't want to remake True Grit the movie, they wanted to make a movie that followed the book. Now I have to read the book.

I'm gonna go see this. Loved the one John Wayne was in.

Me neither. Some remakes in the past have given a new perspective to the original and have turbed out better IMHO. I will watch this one but may wait on HBO.

This love/hate for JW seems to be an age difference thing. The younger folks want to go see the movie and don't really care about JW. It's us older folks that grew up with him that seem to have the most respect for him and his acting. As well as his patriotism for the USA.

I think you are right on. Growing up, he was THE MAN. Tough & honorable and a true patriot in private life.

I am definitely NOT questioning his patriotism...I have read lots of things about him and know that he was a true patriot and loved this country. I believe that he was an exceptional human being.....i just dont like his movies. Edited by titan14

Yeah, this ^^

Also, I LOVE most remakes, especially if it's been a while. The acting isn't always an improvement, but the cinematography is. This version looks much grittier (pun intended) than the original. In this version he looks/acts like what I'd expect an aging drunk man hunter to be like.

I suspect with the Coens at the helm this version will be quite different from the original. Probably kind of dark and quirky like 'No Country'.

I love everything the Coens have done.

I never was a huge JW fan either,I agree with the poster who said he loved westerns just not the ones JW starred in.That being said this movie looks to be allright and I'll prolly catch it when it comes out on video.
