I know this is a really noob question but I am noob to Class III firearms regulations. My question is once you have your stamp and lawfully own a class III weapon...What can you actually do with it? Use it for home defense? Take it to the range? Hunt with it?

There are regularly scheduled submachine gun matches around the country. It's a lot of fun and good practice. TN ranges allow full-auto weapons. If you aren't sure why you want a machine gun, then you probably should save your money. It's a big expense. Not only the firearm, but extra magazines, pouches, tools, and let's not forget ammo! Most people with 5-10 magazines for their semi-auto weapon feel they have enough. That's barely a good start for a machine gun. You will be amazed how fast ammo goes away!

If you aren't sure about buying a machine gun, I would suggest that you go to the machine gun shoot at Knob Creek this Spring (April 8,9,10 2011).

Knob Creek Gun Range - Machine Gun Shoot

You can rent just about any kind of machine gun you like, handle them, and get lots of information directly from the experts.

I would caution people with using something like a machine gun for home defense. Sure, it will get the job done fine but the law looks at justifiable homicide differently when you use something like a machine gun.

Now if all he** broke loose and it's every man for himself. Then by all means, use the machine gun.

Good info to know. What about SBRs, silencers, and other weapons? I mean say you get a stamp for a shorty shotgun. Can that go in the car with you? Or would it be a straight to the range and back toy?

A class III weapon is just like any other weapon you own, it just has extra paperwork. Treat it as such. My suppressors and SBR ride in the truck all the time especially during deer season. The boogie man is not going to get you. ;)
