Truer words couldn't have been spoken, Mars.

A gun in the hand will get two birds in the bush real quick.

Leave a .45 at home and need it vs. a .380 in the pocket? I'll take the pocket (and god willing will have one by the end of this year dang budget)

I guess that I would be in real trouble with my little 25 auto that I carry in my pocket holster, should I ever need it. If I ever had to shoot at someone with it, it would probably just make them mad. I wear shorts and polos nearly 24/7 in the summer time and the little pistol is easily concealed, but not much firepower.

I wear one of my IDPA vests when I am in places where I don't care if people know I am armed. Some of the people I work with and myself carry at work, our boss likes it because in her words it "makes her feel safe" (nice boss huh!), but to keep our customers from possibly feeling uncomfortable I wear a vest so it is at least not obvious that I am totin'. When out with my family I use other, less obvious methods, most of the time.

Actually I have a 25 caliber Sterling. But I don't carry it. More of a curiosity.

Back in the 60s, my dad witnessed a guy get shot several times in the chest at point-blank range with a .25, and the guy receiving the .25s grabbed an old lady and held her between himself and the gunman. He was definitely not "neutralized." BTW, my dad said the poor old lady was "singing a tune." No kidding.

I just did some training with Tom Givens this weekend, and he told a story of a shooting he investigated that involved a man getting shot five times in the chest with a .380. None of the bullets penetrated into his chest cavity, and after receiving the five .380s, he proceeded to beat the shooter half to death. Of course, you can kill someone with a .380 or a .25--you may kill them in their tracks, or they may die next week in the hospital. Your chances of neutralizing them are far greater with a .40 or .45. The trick is to figure out how to keep from leaving that .40 or .45 at home. I have a .380, and it is better than a pocket knife, but I am about to get rid of it for something more substantial. I never carry it as a primary CCW.

I can easily conceal a Glock 23 with shorts and an untucked polo; in fact, that is what I usually wear when the temperature is above 60.

That's why mine is loaded with FMJs. I'd like to see the police report on that incident. 380s should have easily penetrated unless they were those super-killer fragmentation rounds like Extreme Shock..

No doubt that a round with more power is better, but 380 is adequate in my experience.

FMJ 380's is my usual carry load, for my Kel-Tec. I'm confident that I will get penetration, and the BG will leak.

I once asked Chuck Taylor about this--I was thinking the same thing: carry FMJs in my Kel-Tec instead of HPs to insure penetration. His answer? Get a J-frame.:rolleyes:

I have almost decided that a Kahr PM9 or 40 can be concealed just about anywhere my P3AT can, and should be much more powerful, especially the PM40.

He also showed us a target clip (thin black sheet metal clip) that got shot with a .380. First, he showed one that got hit by a 9mm, and it had a 9.1mm hole in it. Then, one hit by a .45, and it had a .46 caliber hole in it. Then, he brought out the one hit with a .380, and the bullet just splattered against it. He said if someone is shooting at you with a .380, just hide behind a few of these clips. His summary of the .380 (exact words): "this thing is a f***ing joke!"

Jeez Tom, why not tell us what you're really thinking?

It seems extremely odd to me, the 9mm kruz or .380 has been used for many years by a large number of police dept. in Europe and has done quite well. To insinuate that the .380 is a f**king joke is pretty foolish to me. I wonder if chuck Taylor would care to be a target for someone standing 7 yards away with a loaded .380. Then again I'd rather rely on a F**king joke .380 than a knife if I were in a gun fight. guess i'm just strange or something.

I've got a fleece-lined vest from North Face that has a semi-waterproof polyester fabric on the outside... It's fairly fitted, so it looks like the typical 'outdoors-poser' black vest, which is fine with me. I wear it unzipped, and my Sig P220 worn IWB does not print, as the vest tends to not hug as tight when unzipped. Heck, even when I've worn it zipped, unless I bend down, the pistol wouldn't print. Vests in general aren't necessarily 'gun-flags'... But 'tacti-cool' vests specifically do stand out more, for sure.

I hear ya--a .380 is better than a knife, but I bet Chuck and Tom would prefer taking four .380s over two .40s. My goal is to avoid situations where a Kel-Tec is the only thing I can carry. Right now, I can easily hide my Glock 27 about 90% of the time. The Kel-Tec is mainly used when I am jogging or when I want a BUG.

Looks like I ditch the vest idea - thanks. Coronado looked good but at $200 and up its kind of spendy. Looks like loose shirts and big-waisted pants are in my shopping list.:( Otherwise a SOB holster and a sport coat.

Before you go buy loose shirts and big-waisted pants you might want to check out an MTAC holster. It's tuckable- your shirt tail will conceal it just fine and it is really comfortable, even after wearing it for 10+ hours a day. I haven't changed anything concerning my daily dress and no one has a clue I'm carrying a full sized SIG. About all I had to do was take my leather belt out 1 notch, now I have a wilderness belt that works much better.

When I feel like carrying my Kahr I use a High Noon tuckable holster.
