Ok, Talked to the shop on Monday, went by on Tuesday to evaluate their assessment for myself. Seems part of the Steering column is broken. The sifter lever is connected to a piece of metal that rotates with the shifter when it is moved. That piece of "Potmetal" has fractured and must be replaced. Its one of those jobs that requires 8 hours of labor to fix a $40.00 part. Im thinking thats a DIY job, well see when I determine the tools required and talk to a couple more shops.

Oh well, I value no auto loan way more than a few minor inconviences now and then. Past year had to replace the drive shaft bearings, had the tranny rebuilt and a couple of other minor things. If it wil hold off for another year without a major breakage I may spare it from a death by firing squad and a a whole bunch of tanerite. Headed out to pick up the last few gifts, will return by 9 to 10is to start hashing out the "Query" thread.
