Blast...Truck wont start!

Thought is was Just the battery at first.

THEN i realized my shifter was flopping around like a wet noodle.

92 F-150, 5.0 302, 2x2, Automatic. Anyone got any tips before i drag it to the shop or a buddies garage and take the steering colum off.

So many ways to respond to that... and most of 'em WRONG. :lol:

Anyway, sounds like a linkage has come apart and the safety switch on the shifter isn't disengaging. But since you wouldn't be able to shift it into a gear anyway, it doesn't really matter that it won't start.

So, start looking for something that's come loose or sheared a pin somewhere between the gear shift and the transmission.

Sorry, but that's all I got without resorting to Viagra jokes. :D

Im gonna finish this cup of Jo and start tearing into it, hopefully its something simple, Just had the tranny rebuilt 3 months ago so there should be no issues there. Im banking on something in the shifter linkage on the steering column, not the tranny, I hope.

Shift linkage is exactly what came to mind for me as well. You may be able to look underneath and see where the shifter comes down and see what's up with the linkage. I don't know the truck in question, but that's at least worth a peek.

I understand that it's a column-shift Auto transmission... but that doesn't mean the linkage AT the transmission was put back together correctly after the repair. And I'm pretty sure the switch may be located on the far end of the linkage, at the transmission. So... the trouble could be anywhere between there and the backside of the shifter handle.

Best to start looking in areas that although hard to get to, don't require any disassembly first. THEN you can start taking your toys apart, if you don't find anything. :D

Wadaya know.....its the Linkage.......mabey,

Had that last cup o Jo, called the shop, sat down on the couch and woke up at 2. Had to bail out the graveyard shift Monday then pull my shift Tuesday. Stayed up too late last night, guess I was kinda tired. At any rate the shop is sending a tow truck. Problem is that its parked Forward in the driveway; front away from the street, guess they will have to drag it a bit??

Since ya can't shift it into neutral they're gonna want to tow it from the rear end anyway, so it's just as well that it's facing away from the street. And if they send a roll-back instead of a standard tow truck, it's really not gonna make any difference, 'cause they'd have to drag it up on the bed no matter which direction it was facing. :)

And I'll wager that they find that the linkage is no longer... linked... to the transmission on the far end. :)

:doh:Its a 2x2 so the front wheels will roll just fine, Steering wheel unlock is a function of the key not the shifter:doh::doh:They had no prob hooking it up from the rear and away they went.

didn't read all the posts, but ifhte shifter feels sloppy maybe it isn't in park or neutral and asa result the safety interlock is keeping it from sending power to the starter

In post #9 I explained that you were worrying for nothin' over the truck facing away from the road... I didn't specifically go into the details concerning the truck being rear wheel drive or the steering column still locking, but I had thought you'd be aware of those things...

Edit: Oh never mind... hardly worth the effort anymore...

( Since the mechanic has it now there's no real point in discussing it further 'til they've had THEIR say. )

Just jackin with ya, of course i saw post #9, in my semi delirious state it just didn't register.

When i realized how retarted I had been for worrying about the direction it was facing I didn't see the need to further emphasize my retardation by pointing out that you had already clearly pointed out that there was no point in being concerned......if you get my point.:devil:

No call from the shop yet, have a 1 year 15,000k warranty...... never heard of that from a tranny shop, they were highly recomended. They said they would call as soon as they determined what the issue was, I expect to hear from them tomorrow or Monday.

In fords it is the "shifter bowl" in the column that comes apart. Kind of a hard job to replace.

Yea I thought better of taking the column apart after a closer inspection, thats when I called the shop.

I want an upgrade to the flux capacitor or dilithium crystal power plant.:devil:

Sounds like what happened to my 01' F-250 (Farm Truck) the bolt that holds the shifter to the linkange came loose (very common problem after a 100k miles) easy fix w/locktight.

Thats what im hoping......EASY to fix.
